Linux Mandrake 9.0 and Win 98.

I am trying to muti-boot Win 98SE and Mandrake. I have downloaded the iso's for Mandrake 9.0 from here (9.0 iso, UK) twice now. first time it crashed during the install stage over and over again so i figured I must have downloaded it wrong or put it on the CD incorrectly. I tried downloading it again but once again the exact same problem. Any bright ideas?

    Hello

    I hit the same problem.

I don't know if it's a Bright idea or not but Try changing your bios PNP/PCI config

PLUG AND PLAY AWARE O/S to NO

Disable the anti virus in your bios, if you have it.

Mandrake 9.0 is a good operating system IMHO.

    good luck.

Try posting anything on this here:

    Apps and Operating Systems

your chances of an answer are better.

    be well

I use a triple boot system. I have two hard disks. The first is 10 GB and has one FAT32 partiton. I installed Windows 98 here first. I have a second drive that is 6GB. It has a 2GB FAT 16 Partition which has DOS 6.22 installed. (I installed this second with only this drive attached.) I then put in the 98 drive as master and the 6 gb as slave. I installed linux mandrake 9 into the last 4 GB of drive 2. It automatically configure lilo to boot drive a (floppy), drive 1 (Win98), drive 2 partion 1 (DOS 6) or partition 2 (linux). I dowloaded the ISO images from a mirror in the US. I do not remember which one. I did not have the problem you did. I have an old AMD K6-2 350 with 256 MB RAM on an ASUS Aladdin 5A-B Motherboard. I have a Sound Blaster Audio PCI, an Optical mouse, 3 Com and NE2000 NIC, and an external USR 56k modem.

What are your specs. Give us some more info. We may be able to help more with detailed system info.

    I'll try downloading from linuxiso.
Here are some of my specs.
    Motherboard: ECS K7VZA 266FSB
    RAM: 320MB PC133
HDD: Master IBM 40g w/ a 10gig partition for windows and a second 30gig partition that I use for general storage.
Slave seagate barracuda 40g w/ a partition of around 4 gigs for linux, a linux swap partition of around 1 gig(dont know what this is for but the mandrake installer told me to make it.) and the rest of the drive is in a partition that I will use for storage.
    Graphics card(AGP): 3d Phantom XP-3800

Anything else you want to know just say what?

BTW do I need all 3 CDs? I have been told that I only need the first 2. Just wanted to make sure.

You can install only CD 1 and your system will run fine. CD 1 has all the required OS files. CD 2 and 3 have applications. I had Linux Mandrake 7.1 before I installed 9. I never created CD 3 and have been able to run all the apps I usually ran in version 7. I will reinstall with CD3 at some point but it is not required.

Your system should run Linux fine. What Chipset is the video card? The Linux Swap partition is required for RAM and HDD swapping just like in windows except linux uses a seperate partition for it. It is a little more efficient but a seperate drive makes the swapping the best.

Sound like your drives are set up fine. I would try the new ISO site. It seems like a good suggestion, I did not download from mandrake as stated in my previous post.

no you only need CD1 and CD 2

CD 3 = asian, russian, greek and many other languages that i'm sure you wont use

by the way i'm running Mandrake 9.0

and i have no problem at all

so yes i do believe it's something in your hardware that is crashing

run MEMTEST and check your RAM to see if they are ok

There are more than just language packs on the 3rd disk. If anybody out there has the 3rd disk, take a look through it and see whats there and post back.
But it isn't required for a basic install. Generally when I want to install another app I usually go to a ftp server so I can get the latest version anyway. Mandrake 9.0 comes with linux kernel 2.4.19, I had to download and install 2.4.20 ent. to resolve alot of the issues with my newer hardware. Same goes with quite a few of the apps and utilities. I look for the most recent because the bugs that cause them to crash or not even load seem to get worked out.

i got mandrake from Mandrake website of course

    http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ftp...2d2bc5.php#iso

and i use Download Managers to get it for me, which is build in for Mozilla

optionally i use GetRight 4.5 it chunks it down and gets it from multiple web and ftp sites for faster DL

the 3 Disk took me 1 hr + 30 min

so it took me aprox 30min per disk

which after i got them all i found out i only really needed disk 1 and 2

since disk 3 is for languages only

The 2 disks took me around 20hours using freshdownload What kind of internet connection you got there? I use broadband 128k. If you could direct me to some of those programs you have talked about (MEMTEST mozilla and getright) that would be great.

I put gtkam and a few other options into my Mandrake 9 system and I had to put all three disks in to complete the installation. It is a very nice operating sytem by the way.

i don't know about you guys

but when i installed Mandrak 9

i placed a check mark for EVERYTHING
    except for the language packs

and it only needed CD 1 and 2

    never asked for CD 3

an i did go into the Detail mode to choose every single box that by default is not checked

I don't know about anyone else, but when I wanted to add things like gtkam for my digital camera, I went to the control center > software management and chose it from there. There are many things there that will not be installed during installation.
