How many years/months/days do you use a cpu for?

I'm gonna work out an average for this one, so can you please post all your "lifetimes" for you cpu's here, as in how long do you use a cpu for before you get another one? If you have more than one computer then just give the results of the one that you use the most...Thanx guys

    I'll start it off.

    1 year

1 year (or so) on my main computer.

    Here's the progression:

    350 K6/2
    550 k6/2
    900 Tbird
    XP2000

I have never spent more than $100 on a cpu. My 2nd computer gets leftovers from the 1st computer.
This is where my signature would go if I wasn't so lazy.

My first P3 650MHz... 3 yrs and still kicking!

My second AMD Duron 1.3.. less than a year!

All my machines will run 100% load 24/7/365 untill they can no longer boot. When I need faster I just build a new one!

    New one? Comming soon!

bubbleflap, for me it's mostly a matter of economics and what the computer is for. I've used a CPU for as long as 5 years (p5-233MMX), and as little as 4 weeks (p5-90) before upgrading. My norm is about 2 years though.

So you went ahead and started a new thread....

    bubbles...
the longest I ever kept a pc intact (no cpu change) was from 1993 to 1997. Since then, however, the cpu product lifecycle has diminished considerably. The 1997 P-II/300 was replaced after only about three years.

Since building/upgrading my own, the longest I've kept a cpu (venerable 1.2/200@1.4/266 TBird) was about two years. The XP2100+ Palomino was replaced in less than 12 months.

The current crop: XP1800+ TBredA, TBredB XP2700+ are both only a couple months old. My wife's P4 1.6A@2.134 is less than 12 months, but is not likely to be replaced in the near future.

I suppose when the next crop of AMDs comes out, the 2700 will go into the 1800 pc, and the latest and greatest will replace the 2700, so figure less than 12 months for those two.

I built this system in 1998, the only changes I've made, are I added a cd burner, more ram, a zip drive, SCSI card, and a second hard drive and replace both the floppy drive and the video card. The CPU and all other components are original. Including fans, case, Mobo, sound card and peripherals.

well my first was a 800mhz duron. i ran it at 100% load 24/7 for about 2 - 2 1/2 years before it finally died.

right now i'm running a athlon xp 1800+ (90-100% load) and i've had it for about 6 months, still running great . probably gonna upgrade in another 6 months.

oh yea, and u got a 1.2ghz duron. i only run it a little bit but i've had it for about 3-4 months. dunno when i'm gonna upgrade it.

    8088:
Had it for three years, from '88 to '91.

Dell 486D/25 from '91 on (how stupid, they name the system after the CPU speed when the mobo has a SOCKET ):
    Intel 486SX/25 -- two yrs
    Intel 486DX4/100 -- two yrs
    AMD 5x86 133 -- 6 yrs and counting

    In another system:
    AMD K6 300 - three yrs
    AMD K6-2 500 @ 550 - 6 months before dying with overvolting
    AMD K6-2 500 the 2nd @ 567 and 2.4v - two months and counting

    Another one:
Celeron 400 @ 533 - used for two yrs, needs a home now
    PIII/733 @ 800 - eight months and counting

    My high-end limo:
Athlon XP Palomino 1533 @ 1667 -- eight months before accidentally cracking the core
    Athlon XP T-bred A 1533 @ 1860 -- two weeks and counting

I plan to keep these CPUs until they break. I'm upgrading b/c my dad needs a better system than the PIII/733, so I'm giving him my mobo once the 8-RDA+ comes in, which should be any day now. When 3000+ version of the lovely CPU below hits the shelves, I'm getting it and giving my dad the XP 1800+ tbred a.

    Let's see. I had a 286 10mhz for 6+ years before I got a... 486 dx2 66mhz which I had for 4 years...

From there I built my first computer with a 400mhz PII. About 2 years later, I switched the processor with a P3 750, which I am still using, some 1 year and a few months later.

My K6-2 500 system I built 2 years ago, and it hasn't changed much.

I also built a XP 1600+, which I am using solely as a gaming machine. 2 months since that was built.

So, that 286 is now 13 years old and intact, the 486 is now 7 years old and intact.

I usually keep CPUs for about two to three years. However, the prices of CPUs is very low now ($50 for an Athlon XP 1600+) so i might upgrade within the next six months.

    100Mhz P1: 1995-1998
    433Mhz Celeron: 1998-2001
    900Mhz Duron: 2001-2002
    1400Mhz Athlon Tbird: 2002-present.

my dad used a 486 since the 80's and still does. I dont think I'd ever be able to do that.

P2-300 for 5 years. I love this thing. Still using it

P3-700 for 4 years and still clunking along.

Wow, I had to do some thinking on this one, lets see....

My old Tandy 8086 I bought in 1990, no hard drive, upgraded it to 640k ram and it lasted about 4 years.

    486DX66 in 1992, lasted 3 years.

    486DX100 in 1995, lasted 7 years.

    K62 300 in 1998, still running today.

XP1500 in 2002, and is my current system. It's about 1 year old and I'm about to upgrade to a XP2000 because they are so cheap, otherwise I would let it run another year as my main computer.

I also bought and sold several laptops, as I traveled alot, and can't remember what all they were and didn't care since my company provided them.
