is england a country or a territory?

it sounds like a really stupid question but i'm a little confused. when i ask somebody where they are from and they say "UK" that could mean they are from Scotland, England, Wales and i think there's another one...

on Leno (american late night TV show), Jay was asking people on the street some questions and getting silly answers... now one of the things he said was "if people are welch , what country are they from" and he hinted that the answer was Wales. does that mean Wales is a country or is the country called UK and Wales is just a province/territory of it?

    don't laugh at me

I understand that England is a country/province (whatever you call it), but UK or Great Britain, which emcompasses England, Wales and a dozen of then-smaller countries, is what is seen as a nation on the world stage. The Wales don't like the English and neither does the English to the Wales. Neither prefers to be mistaken as the other. Scotland, Ireland are subjects to GB. Australia and Canada are much distant subjects to GB as well. Mess with GB and you got a dozen countries on your @ss

It's the centre of the Universe!

Great Britain is the large Island, England, Scotland and Wales make up GB and are Countries.

The UK consists of the previous 3 + Nothern Ireland (subject to change ) and all of the small Islands, Orkneys, shetlands etc.

The British Commonwealth has you all surrounded and to be British you must be born within the Commonwealth (which gives many Dual Nationality).

ooops! nearly forgot Cornwall (SW England), the Cornish claim to be a country in thier own right, I'm not so sure about that, but they make very nice Pasties.

thanks for clarifying that.... so does that mean England has its own military and government, Wales has its own military and government and Scotland has its own military and government or is it all joined into 1 big government and 1 big military for Britain?

Thats quite a bone of contention, up until recently it was all ruled by enghland, but there are various movments calling for 'devolution' in scotland and wales etc and gradually they are gianing the right to self government in small matters ... i think

As for the army its all one thing split into reigonal regiments

There are Scotts, Welsh, and Irish Guards, but they all come under British Forces.

Oh! Yeah, There's also the British Isles, which ropes in Geurnsey, Gibralter, etc. I think they're all governed from Central Government. Devolution already happened in Scotland and I think Wales too, The Irish just dashed thier hopes for self-rule because of allegations of spying.

Not a chance! Manchester's not even the Second City, Birmingham has that honour. Last time I went to Manchester, I blinked and missed it, and as for those football teams ...! what am I getting myself into here?
