i have a HP cd-writer plus 8100 series CD-RW, the writes at 4x, re-writes at 2x, and reads at 24x
now i just got a new one from the mail from best buy, called buslink 48x CD-RW drive and it writes at 48x, re-writes at 12x, and reads at 48x
aint i happy , but the down is that i still have to install it , and if you knew my computer, it doesnt like anything that you do to it...

Why keep the old 4x in there?

Better hope it isn't OEM (I believe), as my friend has a drive that writes at 32x, but he can only use software that allows 12x, any other burning programs won't run, as the firmware chip checks what program is doing the burning. So he has a registered copy of nero just sitting on his desk (30x max burn speed on that version), but he HAS to use the Adaptec burner (Roxio) to burn CD's at 12x. He's tried several different burners, used the retail's firmware upgrade (which screwed the drvie up and he had to install the OEM firmware upgrade again). I don't even think they make 38x rated CD's for burning yet. Highest I've seen was 32 I believe.
