Asus uses Lite-On guts. Don't be fooled. It's still a good, fast burner, but TEAC, Samsung, LG and Yamaha are more reliable.

I prefer Yamaha. I've got a Yamaha SCSI CD/RW I've been using for about 3½ years now and it still works like new. A friend of mine just bought the new 44x24x44 IDE drive and it works perfectly. Plus I think the Text on CD is really cool.

I personally like LG, teac, and lite-on.
I have had success with all of those brands

I have used BusLink,Plexator,Lite-on,Yamaha
The Bus-Link would not work with anything on the IDE cable with it. It only had one connection on the supplied cable also.
Plexy and Lite-on I have had no problems.
The Yamaha works good. But it is a 16X SCSI burner. It sounds like a helicopter taking off when you drop a CD into it. It vibrates like one also.

Asus don't use lite-on guts.Asus are designed and built by Asus.
Get a Asus or lite-on if your looking at backing up games.
Yamaha or plexy for audio.

Since when does Asus make optical drives from scratch? I think you had better check your facts. There are only about 5 optical drive makes in the world and Asus isn't one of them.

They only thing Asus and Lite-on have in common is that they run a Mediatek chip set.Every thing else on the Asus is built inhouse.

I have an LG, to my total satisfaction. In burning CD's that is..

Yamaha is nice, but a little pricey.

Couple weeks ago i bought a 40x Liteon burner.. it was cheap for the kind of speed it deliverd. But i bought it anyway.
I don't think i seen a better burner or cd-reader before. It can read any cd i've put in it, burn at every speed and never had a failed cd.
I would recommend Liteon, one of the best out there
