rma update
i recieved my maxtor rma...... i sent a 30 gb 7200 rpm ata 100....they sent me a 40 gb 7200 rpm ata 133......sweet!..i will install this weekend, and just wanted to know...does it make any difference what drive is slave/master?...both are 7200 rpm, and my board is ata100...one is a wd 60 gb and the other is the new maxtor rma. i dont seem to have any problems with this rig now and want to keep it this way. should i think about adding a hdd cooling fan? i have had no heat issues ....the next step is to screw up the guts to flash the bios. [ i havent done this yet and i am afraid of screwing it up].... thanks for all the help.....sam..... note: if the maxtor is to be the mastor, how do i go about transfering the data from the exisiting drive? i am on dialup, and i hate the thought of downloading xp service pac 1 again after a format. thanks again.

Hehe the same trade they did with me. I went to store after mine died and they didnt sell'em any more. Only 40gig and up. They had 30gig in other brands though. Plus alot of people on sysopt said their 30gig ata100 maxtors died. BAD batch is all I have to say. But in every case they were replaced with faster higher capacity drives. Gotta love that, gotta love that.

As far as master/slave staus goes, you're better off making each drive a master on separate controllers. Make your optical drives slaves.
The drive you're booting up needs to be Primary master. If you think that the new drive is faster, use Norton Ghost or Drive Image to copy old to new and the switch drives. Format the old one after you've booted and checked the new drive.
