    Question on P4 Processors

When I upgraded my 2.26 processor to the 2.8, I came across a problem with, when you remove the fan and heatsink, The heatsink actually pulls the Processor off the board with it, even tho the latch handle is down.....

If you have to remove and then install your processor, is there any way to avoid that??? OR when you reinstall it, do you have to get a new heatsink and use artic silver?

Bad socket. Consider replacing the mobo if it's really bad

    bad socket?

    Bad Socket??

I don't think that is the case, this Processor sticks to the heat sink pad so well that I had to use some force to pop it off it.

To get around a cramped psu space on an otherwise roomy case, I had to remove the heatsink from a P4 2.53ghz in order to replace the psu. The thermal pad did not stick to the processor, but part of it was left on the processor and part on the heatsink.

You can gently scrape off the thermal pad from both processor and heatsink and use some thermal compound in its place. It doesn't necessarily have to be arctic silver.

"when you remove the fan and heatsink, The heatsink actually pulls the Processor off the board with it, even tho the latch handle is down....."

Wait, you are saying that you pulled the HSF off the cpu and the cpu came out of the mobo socket whilst doing that. THAT is a bad socket. They have mucho force on the pins and if not it WILL cause connection probs. later down the road. Like general instability that you will have a heck of a time figuring out after you forgot about this incident. Return the mobo as ND said. There is NO excuse for that weak of a socket.

That situation is perfectly normal, don't worry!
478 sockets were not designed to grab the CPU, just hold it!

If that was true, I would have to RMA ALL P4 boards I've ever worked with...

I have run into that as well. My last HSF pulled the CPU right off the board. MSI 845G-Max (MS-6580). The thermal grease stuck so well it just pulled the CPU right out of the socket. (This was with a lapped Dragon Orb). The bottom of the Orb was very smooth and the thermal grease stuck extremely well... I too had to pry off the CPU from the HS. (not extreme prying, just using my fingers before it finally popped off)

What! My asus p4te grabs that cpu like no tommorow. It never left loose when removing HSF and also with the original Thermal pad interface! Why in gods name would you want loose contacts? Thats not even ethical!

By the way not saying I dont believe you guys. Just that I know Intel spec, isnt like that. Its the mobo's manufac's doing it. Or why else would mine grab it soo good and others not?

This is the first board I have ever run into like that. It is odd I must say. But (knock on wood) I haven't had any problems. And it only did it with the ORB. Non of the other coolers had that effect. They came off just fine. The Orb was the only one that pulled it out of it's socket. ????
