How to install 2nd Hard Drive?
Hi, I have a 20 gig Western Digital 7200 using DMA in Windows. I have an old Quantum Fireball 6.1 gig 5400 that I want to add for some extra room. The old drive still has Windows 98 on it. When I plug it in as the slave using the 80 pin cable I get a Primary Hard drive controller error Yellow !. If I unplug the second drive, it's back to normal. Anyone? Thanx!!!!!!

I'm not too sure but i think the quantum doesn't support ata 66 transfers therefore you would have to use 40 pin ide cable to hook it up.
Try puting the quantum on its own ide channel or hook it up with your cdrom with the drive being the master and the cdrom as slave

Make sure the jumpers are set correctly on the drives.
Else, second channel, as jaida suggests.

If the Quantum has Win98 on it, it must have an active dos partition. don't think you can have two drives on the same system with both having an active dos partition. The normal way to have a slave drive is, fdisk and set up a dos partition, but do not make it active (making a drives dos partition active makes it bootable)Then do the other partitions in the extended position if wanted, or go with the total capacity in the dos partition...just don't make it active. Then, format the drive, being carefull to not format the master drive, or any of its partitions. Then with the Quantrum jumered as a slave to the master, boot to Win, and you will see the added drive(s) show up. I do not know anything about any problems with ATA 33 vs 66 ect.

Thanks guys, I am still a little confused on this. This seems like a safe way to do this, correct me if I am wrong. Disconnect the master, let the slave(Quantum)boot Win98 and then format with Fdisk. Then reconnect the Master Western Digital and I should have a blank slave right? Also, I had a disk utility to format the WD drive, I don't have one for the Quantum and have never used Fdisk. The Quantum is a Fireball 6.1gig, what would be the correct command line parameters for Fdisk for this drive? Thanx!!!!!!!!
