The Quake1 engine is the most successful ever. Not only did it spawn Quake, it also is what is behind the half-life engine.

Half-life IS a modified Quake engine. The Quake engine spawned the whole thing. As a pure 3d engine I still think it rules. Half Life was best use of Quake engine, IMO, and the best game ever. If you want to compare games using Half Life's modified Quake engine vs. games using pure Quake engine then add up all the games using Quake engine and it's gonna beat all the Half Life mods, in terms of popularity - if that's what you are driving at. I stll think Half Life is best game.

I really like unreal because of how easy it is to work with. UnrealEd p4wn3s!
This is where my signature would go if I wasn't so lazy.

I disagree Unreal Ed is so intimidating to look at - easiest engine to edit with is Halflife and worldcraft

--Quake 3 engine is probably the best overall, but with the major overall for ut2k3 im pretty impressed by the unreal engine

Once you spend a little time in unrealed, it becomes really easy. It works different from the Quake engine because you use brushes to carve out the geometry of the level instead of adding it in.

unreal and quake have glaring polygon limitations, but,

chex quest used the doom engine

DOOM III and Ut2k3 are much better

    For popularity I'd say Quake.

Considering UT sold more then Quake 3, I don't think so. Hows 3 Million + Sales worldwide sound? For the most part there was always more people on playing UT statisitcally as well, except late night. Mod community seemed a good deal bigger as well.

Unreal franchise is just a monster period. Out of nowhere it came to sell near 5 million copies worldwide between only Unreal and Unreal Tournament, and if UT2003 and U2 keep at it, I see no problem with this series reaching 10 million..which is typically unheard of in this industry.
