unable to access cable internet connection.. ?

Hi, I hope someone could help answer this, it sounds a bit strange, but here it goes:

My brother recently signed on for internet access through cable.
For the first week everything was working fine. Today he phoned me and says that he can not access the internet, (web page not available).

His cable modem is working properly and his NIC is also working ??? He did say that when he tried to access his MSN mail , he received an error message saying his internet connection was not working and that he may be behind a firewall.

Any suggestions?? From what I know you are you assigned a single IP address, and this address has not changed ?
I told him to call his cable provider, they told him to reinstall the drivers on the NIC ?? Would this solve his problem ?

    Thanks ...

Sounds like it's probably a problem on the cable side. Could be that the MAC address of the modem timed-out in their system. This happens more often than you think with new installs.

Also, are you sure the IP address is the same? You may not have a static IP. The IP may have expired and it didn't renew for some reason.

Are you behind any type of firewall? Like Zone Alarm or a router?

unplug the cable modem then plug it back in to reset it. run winipcfg on win9x or ipconfig /renew on win2k/xp. see if you get anything then.

ping 127.0.0.1. if you get a response, the NIC is fine.

like cableguy said, do you have a firewall or router?

Yep, like midknyte said, power cycle your modem and try to ping that IP. Then go for the renewing of the IP.

OK, after running ipconfig /renew he's receiving
    - DHCP server unreachable

Ok, I know the DHCP server is responsible for assigning IP Addresses to clients.... is this a problem he can fix or is it his ISP's
    responsability ???

    thanks...

    Update>

Ok, The ISP reports that the signal is reaching the modem, and that the modem is working correctly... so, that that leaves the NIC, (which reported no problems during the ping loopback) and ??? Would seting up a new dial and networking connection help ?

are you sure the cable itself is good? does the link light turn on?what does it say when you do a ipconfig /all? keep trying to renew the ip. sometimes it takes a few minutes for the modem to give an IP. do you need to re-register the MAC address of the nic with your ISP?

Ping loopback does not mean your NIC is working

try to ping something across your network another PC or to a website

    like
    ping computer_next_desk
    or
    ping yahoo.com

    Hi Midknyte,

Ok, My brother says the link light is on (on the NIC). I'll ask him to run ipconfig /all. He did say that when he tried ipconfig /release he received a message saying something to the effect that the IP address could not be released

I should mention too, that I have no access to this computer. I'll try and keep you updated...

    Thanks again,

****. I just read your first post. the IPs are static, so he'll get that error when trying to release it. I had the idea that it was dynamic. my bad. if it checks out with the ISP, there's not a whole lot you can do about that.

pinging the loopback is the first step. try pinging your own IP (his ip, whatever). then try pinging the IP of a website.

you can also remove the network card drivers and tcpip and reinstall.

    Hi again Midknyte

    ok... here's what he's reported:

    ipconfig /release results:

All adapters bound to DHCP do not have DHCP addresses. The addresses were automatically configured and can not be released. ( As you have just stated )

    ipconfig /renew results:

The following error occured when renewing adapter to local connection 2HCP

This is strange to me that everything is working fine one day, and a few days later he has this problem ??? I agree that the problem is in the NIC,

So, I'll tell him to remove and then reinstall the drivers on the NIC, and see what happens...

that would be your next step if you cannot ping your own ip address. I have had to reinstall OSes because of corrupted tcpip stacks before. you might also want to run a virus scan.

    Just a thought,

You mentioned deleting TCP/IP and then reinstalling TCP/IP,
how could this fix the problem ?
