    Startup Beeps

Is there a way to turn of or at least turn down the sound level of the beeps that occur on startup of Win 98? It can be embarrassing on a plane when I start up my laptop. I have tried turning down the sound in the control panel but it does't affect the beep. I'm using a desktop scheme. I'm not sure if the beep is set by that.

Sure, first of all, your laptop should have a volume control on it. If not (bad design), you can get rid of the sounds in the Control Panel under "Sounds". You can also lower the volume useing the windows Volume Control on the taskber. If it is not there, then you need to install in under Add/remove programs ->Windows Setup...
