56K Modem Suggestions
I am looking into upgrading to a 56K modem for my friend's system. He has an IBM Aptiva E40, 486, CyrixInstead MoBo, 48Mb RAM & Win95. I know that this is an old system and that there may be compatability problems with some of the modems out today. I alos, don't know whether to go PCI or ISA. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Go with a ISA Hardware modem. It want use up your CPU

I agree...
Get an ISA or go with an external.
They use less resources.

External serial modem is your best bet. I highly recommend a Creative Modem Blaster, external of course.

I'm very happy with my Zoom PCI Hardware modem, V.90. ~ up to the point where I found that its upgradable EEPROM can't be upgraded to V.92.
That said, I've seen excellent connect speeds and great performance from $10 PCI WinModems. It seems to depend on what is running in the background, line quality, and system capacity.
BTW ~ The industry considers the ISA buss to be obsolete. And not all external units are "hardware" modems.
