Actually, a little less, like 523264.

If I change it below 512 then is the other ram not doing anything ? would it be the same to keep it at 512 and not 768 ? or dose it still use all the ram ?

It really can't use all of the RAM. If you have the Office version of Outlook, open it and shrink it. Leave it running. You'll run out of system resources in within hours and the PC will crash.

I've had a lot of Win9x experience and nothing over 128MB ever seemed to change a thing.

Are you running windows XP ? If so how do they compare to 98se ? I play alot of games with the boys thru Multi Player. would that affect game play, 2 systems with different windows? Just wondering.

    You Ae The Man

That info was right on target I added the Maxfilecache set at 523264 and changed the max Ram MB to the 999 and she's up and running. Thanks a million. I'm one happy camper But in a way I do agree with BiPolarBill as I have added 700 + MB ram and noticed really no change in my system. The big tesy will be when I download off the net and play a game while waiting. But then I've done that now with little trouble. but I'll add a transfer of documents from my network and see if it keeps up. Thanks joe

Hearing is reading in cyber land. If cnn7 takes your advice and believes none of what he hears, he won't believe that he should believe none of what he hears. Which means he's is believing you. But on the other hand, if he doesn't believe you, then that means he is believing you since he's not believing what he hears. And...oh lordy...time to go find the giant bottle of asprin I'm afraid.
This is wrong also, as on this forum you don't "hear" anything, you "See", so he should only believe half of what BPB wrote... now, which half to believe???

I run Win2K and WinXP on all machines except for "guinea pigs". They game just fine. Keep in mind that a 1GHz CPU and 512MB RAM is best for gaming on WinXP. Win2K is less demanding - 500MHz and 256MB.

    cnn7...
Consider this approach which we use on my daughter's pc: if you already have W98se add WinXP (Pro version personal preference) and make your's a dual boot system.

Regarding W98se... my daughter's PC (a TBird 1.2/200@1.4@266 on an Asus A7V133 mobo) has 768mb of ram. We use the [vcache] fix mentioned in an above post to limit the ram for W98se to just under 512mb.

Here's a couple links on the subject: http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q253912,
    and http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthre...hreadid=111404
    and one more http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm.

We use all the ram when running XPPro.

Most all newer games run just fine in XPPro, some older ones require using XP's "Compatability" features and they run okay. A few older games do have to be run in W98se (I jst have not gotten them to work in XP), and you'll have better luck getting DOS games to run with sound support in W98se. Also some gaming hardware (like Intel's Me2Cam) only are supported in W98/W98se.

If I only had W98se, then I would sell any ram I had beyond 512mb and be done with it, unless you were planning to upgrade OS in the near future. Then use the tricks given in the links above to limit your W98se ram.
