Robotics fax modem V.90 56K standard X2 technology compatible.

This is an external modem and I need it because all of my PCI slots will be filled and I only have one open. I'm getting a great deal on it but it has no connectios. Is this good and what do you think? Should I?

if the price is right and it's got the modem on hold etc. it's a good option - what's it missing - the AC adapter, phone line connector?

you can order those items, the phone line connector shouldn't cost much (?) maybe even find a cheap or comparable universal AC adapter, but check carefully what the modem uses in terms of volts in, etc.

The owner doesn't know if its XP compatible.

I need to know if it's XP compatible now. I have no information on it and neither does the owner. He says it may be old. Do you think it will work because of the USB?

Since it's external, it's likely a hardware modem, meaning it's not a winmodem. Unless it's USB, then it may be a winmodem. You can check the U.S. Robotics web site for information. This model's drivers could very well come with Windows XP.

    Check here for drivers:

Check here to see if it's drivers come with Win XP:
    http://www.usr.com/support/s-windows.asp

Of course to use the above, you'll have to find out the model number.

It just may be that this modem is the one described here:

to be honest, it's missing stuff, usr is horrible in terms of trying to find right drivers for older modems (you may not find 'em for XP)

    - you're probably better off going to pricewatch and buying one - I see externals on sale from time to time for $35-50 - check compgeeks and pcliquidators too

actually the USR modems are the most reliable modems ever

and so easy to find drivers for any OS.

as for the model metioned, there is a free upgrade to go all the way to v92

Not disagreeing on usr modems - they're very good - but I couldn't find the modem or its drivers this a.m. for that model (it was early tho), and I have a couple older pci usr winmodems (and even an old hardware modem) laying around with no drivers available for xp.

and he still needs to buy an adapter and find the connector rj11 or whatever it is - seems to me it was about an $80 modem (could be wrong) - but if he's getting it real cheap maybe it's worth the hassle finding the parts
