Couch Potato... i agree with you...
more and more people just download illegal content - and then they dont even use half of it. Instead all they do is redistribute.

And as to "no one is paying for entertainment"... that a pandora's box. We, in general, are told that - by the media conglomeraters... but how do we know its true ?
What about all the artists who want their content to be made freely available, but instead is being controlled by the Media companies.

Remember, its actually very rare for a 'signed' artist to actually own their own music - usually the label steps in with a contract to take ownership in exchange for a few penny's.

So... therefore defining a pirate, is a very hard to define step.
We can say the person is stealing content - but how do we know this is actually the case, until we see proof of ownership with Copyright certification... and the media compaies dont actually own everything as they'd like to.

Finally... what about muscial groups such as TLC. We all remember the girl group called "TLC" signed to Sony (i think).
Anyway... TLC declared bankruptcy several years ago - its thought the record company never paid all the royalties to the girls. Anyway, since they declared bankruptcy, the label takes all control of their copyrighted works, continues to resell the products, and keep all royalties for themselves.
So.. senerio - i puchase a TLC CD from a CD store tomorrow.
Who gets 100% of the royalties from the sale ? Sony.
So hence the question... who are the real pirates out there ?

Just want to make sure I have the scenario correct:

A company has the legal rights to an audio/visual product. They have used legal and maybe even perfectly above-board ethical means to obtain those rights. Or, maybe used every dirty trick in the book to virtually steal those copyrights.

A person downloads music or a movie copyrighted by this company without paying for it.

Who is the pirate? What’s so hard about that? Seems simple. Two wrongs never have made a right where I grew up.
I plan on living forever. So far, so good.

Some of us have huge record collections and it is so much easier to download mp3's than to rip all our records and tapes. I lost count of my record and tape collection years ago. When I had usenet access to the good stuff (new ISP blocked access to just about everything) I would download new albums listen to them and if I liked them I would go out and buy the cd. If I did not like it I deleted it.

Many albums I have copy’s of in several formats, record, tape and cd. So I had to buy the same album three times, or more, because of technology advances. And what about all those tapes that got chewed that I had to buy again? I will gladly trade in many of my records and all of my tapes for a cd. But noooo, they won't do that they just want you to buy another copy so they can make more money from you. Furthermore, IMHO mp3's do not compare to the SQ you get from records or cd's.

My point it the quality of the stuff you get over the internet usually is not equal to what you buy and I think most people who download stuff will buy it if they like it.

BTW: since I won't use any of those p2p apps I cannot get anything anymore because my ISP blocked usenet access to it now.

are u sure ur ISP blocked it?? maybe its just that ur running a firewall. for example winxp has this nasty build in one that doesnt let u use p2p software.

Yes, I am sure. They blocked all the good mp3/movie/warez related usenet groups (newsgroups). I have access to something like 50k groups but nooo they just had to block the ones I liked most. But if I wanted to look at porn they did not block those, flippin idiots! I would have to pay for a premium usenet service, such as giganews, if I wanted to access them but its not worth the bother.

As far as p2p apps such as kazza, edonkey etc go: I don't like them and won't use them. Of course there is always IRC and it works ok. IMO nothing beats usenet.

    I pay for hockey tickets...

I pay for buskers down at the water front...

I pay for going to concerts...

they get my money.. so I download MP3's....

I choose my pay per view events... and they get my money.

    I pay.. I pay ... I pay....
