Not enough memeory to run Programs Problem
Could anyone help with this.
I have a 750 MB RAM Athlon 1.2 GHZ processor M/B Gigabyte GA-7zxR with a Philips CD/RW and Liteon 48x DVD player. I have a 20GB HD
I am running windows 98 SE.
I am experiencing problems with error messages saying
1. When trying to install office from my DVD ROM
2. When I just try to go to command line at MS-DOS
"There is not enough memory to run this program. Quit one or more programs and try again."
I have assessed what is running in memory at present and I can't see anything excessively memory intensive.
Could it be something to do with DMA or 32 bit access.
It has not become a problem before
Can anyone help
Thanks

You actually have TOO MUCH physical memory. This makes W9x run out of addressing space for virtual addresses.
This operating system is designed for no more than 512 MBytes. There are a couple of tweaks to push the limit a bit, but at the end of the day the DOS based Windows flavors aren't ready for lots of RAM.

Welcome to Sysopt!
OK, if you have ascessed everything, then... er...
Check the taskbar icons on the lower-right corner, you could have some anti-virus programs, crash guards, etc.
For a more thorough check, do a CTRL+ALT+DEL (ONCE), and end any unneccessary processes. Don't end Explorer or Systray, they are quite necessary.

Try making sure your virtual memory is set right.

Take some of your ram out see what happens...get it down to 512 MBytes.

Thanks for the advice.
Peter - I removed some memory so I now have 512 MB and everything was ok.
Thanks once again

If your still game to use all your ram go to run box type sysedit select the system.ini file go down to [386Enh] rite under this paste this in
MaxPhysPage=30000
save and exit shutdown put the ram back in and see if it works, worth a shot.

Ok, I don't remember exactly how to do it, but this should fix it. After 512 mb ram windows poops on itself becuase it doesn't have enough adress space to make the disk cache that big. So its actually a problem with it handling disk cache size. What you have to do is limit the max disk cache size to under 512 mb. You have to add (or change if there) the max disk cache size in system.ini to a measure less than 512 in the file. Heres what mine looks like edited to about 64 mb (you have to put it in bytes).
[vcache]
MaxFileCache=65536(add this line under the vcache section and change 65536 to the number you want to limit it to)
CHUNKSIZE=2048(dont change this and don't bother adding it if its not here)
I hope I replied soon enough, I don't want you throwing out some ram for no reason
