100 light not on

So as my networking saga continues...

I got some cat 5 cable put connectors on and my first connection seems to be working fine. There are two little lights on router one labeled "100" the other labeled "LAN". Bot are lit up for that port.

The second computer I have hooked up is right by the router so I just used an existing 6 foot network cable I happened to have. I am on that computer right now so this is going through the network card and router and all. But only the "LAN" light is on on the router for this port. What is the significance of the "100" light not going on? Both lights on the network card in the machine are on, btw.

You either have an LED that doesn't work (rare) or you're getting 10Base-T network speeds. Check the settings for the NIC to see if you can change it to Auto-detect.

Yes usually it's just a nic that has not been set to Auto Speed yet

unless your nic is really only a 10 mbps nic

Okay thanks...definitely is a 10/100 card and led is not out. So must be auto-speed/auto-detect thing. Where do I change that?

Hey now its not nice to make fun of the old folks...besides it was past my bedtime when I posted that second question.

I looked at network properties but not on the right path. Looked at control panel then network. Now I found that setting under control panel/system...

Anyway the automatic settings thing was already checked. I'll make sure driver is updated next.

My son tells me that if the 100 light is not on I am getting 10 Mbps...since this is my antique 486/120MHz, that's probably plenty fast enough anyway. Maybe it is protecting itself...might explode at that higher speed.
