    Windows 98 upgrade

I cannabilized a Compaq I got hold of and ended up with a Win98SE upgrade CD left over with the manual. Now is this compatible with any new HDD I install or is it limited to "only" compaqs liek the disk says? Anyone ever try to load the likes of it on a new drive ? I simply don't have a new HDD to try it on yet.

Im not entirely sure - as ive heard of many manufacturers only providing half assed install discs that will only do such and such and only work on this and that...

...if its a win98 UPGRADE disk though and does work, you still gonna need another OS on the new hard disk anywyas - bear that in mind...

    yep, and thanks 'staffa:

I got an original 98 with numbers and guess I will just try to load that on an HDD I got coming for the grandkids computer from Shinta. Then I will try the upgrade (has everything with it) and see if its worth keeping around. I have 98SE too with all the numbers, so if it fails I can always re-format. Wonder what it would be worth to someone if I wanted to trade it or sell it. Whats an upgrade worth nowadays? Of course this is the Compaq label but I will see if it works.

If I reformat (BTW) do I have to FDISK the drive and then format, to get the win98 OS off and reload the win98SE I have, or do I only have to format?

You can just format the drive.

You don't have to have another windoze OS on the hard drive. You can just pop in an older windoze install CD when it asks for it. Even works with win 3.1 floppies.

People sell OEM windows cds from compaq, hp, etc. all the time on eBay.

you can actually format the HDD to do a Clean install using the upgrade CD
the only OLD file you need to keep is

    WIN.COM
