New P4 System- Slower than PIII

I got the following components setup for a friend of mine. I thought it would be the best of them all...but then after having seein the whole thing functioning i must say that the P4 is very very slow....even slower than a PIII 1gig.

it takes almost 1 to 2 minutes for the desktop to appear. there r no errors...programs takes lot of time to load and stuff.

I don't know why he likes computerhq.com so much but he insisted to get the components from them so it was kinda expensive. and he also hates AMD though I told him you don't need to buy everythin from computerhq and amd is better price/performance wise. but he was not to change his opinions.

My friend here wants to exchange it for my P3 1 gig(he must be jokin i think)...and though the new system has some real great components integrated...I am in 2 minds.

I can't understand where the problem lies..perhaps its Western digital or the ram or the mobo/p4...oh hell its **** frustratin.

    New system specs
    ================
    Intel P4 2.26 533 $255
    Asus P4T533 mobo $172
    Samsung PC1066 512MB(2-256mb module) RDRAM $180*2
    Gainward VTI gf4 4400 128mb $248
    Creative labs Audigy MP3 $79
    Creative 5.1 speakers $79
    Western Digital 100Gb 8mb chache $191
    Mitsumi1.44 FDD $14
    Sony 16x dvd $54
    Asus 40x cdrw $79
    Samsung 19" CRT 955DF Mon $229
    Antex sx1200 cabinet with 2 fans $99
    Enermax 350 watts PS $52
    MS PS/2 KBD $20
    Logitech First mouse-wheel Ps/2 $24
    3Com 56k pci modem $35
    Intel EtherExpresspro LAN Card $45
    OS- Win2k pro $139
    Partition Magic pro 7 $45

I hate to say this to him but he could have got it a little cheaper i suppose...had he done some r&d like goin to pricewatch, resellerratings and stuff. perhaps next time he will be a lot smarter.

there is no way a p3 can even come close to a
    Intel P4 2.26 533
    with
    Samsung PC1066 512MB

    benchmark the system...
it will show you how slow the p3 is!(compare to this)

yes both the system has 2kpro installed..and it doesn't take that long to bootup 2Kpro on PIII maybe lesser than a minute(only after installin IAA).The only benchmark that he did was on his video card using 3dmark...he said he got around 10K or 11K don't remember the exact score. I told him to try out some sisoft sandra benchmarks...like memory, cpu multimedia..etc. lets c what the results r.

You're stating that the comp takes a while to boot. Solve this problems by tweaking the bios. Things like floppy boot seek take a few seconds more to load, so disable it. If you can manually set your hard drives, cdroms, etc. you'll shave a few more seconds off the boot time. Also, some bioses have an "optimal" setting inside where it will simply set all the best settings for you.

The Audigy is probably like my Live Platinum with the facia that you hook to the front of the tower. This IO gizmo needs to initialize, but shouldn't take much time on a K-A machine like this. Still, that will lose you a few seconds.

Try tweaking the bios. Post back with questions regarding bios settings, or other comments.

    cheers,

In terms of the hardware listed, there's no way it should be so slow. There's got to be some sort of problem / conflict going on, it's just a matter of trouble shooting it. Check all of the devices in System Manager, make sure there's no problems there and see if there's some sort of interrupt sharing issue. I'm not sure about 2K, but there might be an issue with the NIC, if there's no internal IP assigned (might be 'looking' for a LAN on boot). Might be any number of Windows set up issues....

A lot of people complain because boot take so long... a lot of time people run too many programs from startup..Make sure only the one's you NEED run at start-up (msconfig). Others you use a lot can go in the quick launch bar... /shrug, it helps me a ton

He has tried all the BIOS settings...but it all seems to be ok. For the time being.. I have told him to disable his NIC and use it only when he wants to connect it to his laptop for data transfer and stuff.

This may perhaps reduce the time to load the OS, i think.

is there a Msconfig for Win2kpro?...perhaps disabling some useless apps at startup may be helpful.
