I have been through 2 major earth quakes. I was 12 miles from the epicenter during the Silmar quake in '70 or '71 which nearly threw me out of the top bunk of my bunk bed. The strangest one was in Ancona Italy. I was hitchhiking through Europe with a buddy and camped near a cattle ranch just outside of Ancona. When the ground shook it woke the cows and us and I could see flashes of St. Elmo's fire crackling around their horns in the moon light.

I live south of that area. Didn't feel a thing.
During the Northridge earthquake, my brother said he was awakened by the quake, but he said he was going to go back to sleep when his roomates told him he was nuts. His apartment building was later condemned, and he lost his new bed! Didn't have anything to haul it out on.

I read something interesting about where I now live. I was reading about earthquakes on the internet and it listed the ten worst recorded earthquakes in the country. Kau District (where I live near South Point on the Big Island) was listed as number ten. Estimated to be 7.9 on the Richter scale back in the late 1800's. We still get a lot of quakes here, more then So.Cal. but no biggies in the ten years I have lived here.

I lived in Seward Alaska in 1965 when the big one hit Anchorage. Seward is now rebuilt about 2 miles further back from where it was before. The damage came not from the quike but from the Sanamie wave that pulled all the water out of the bay and then it all came in again and wiped out the city.
The school where I lived used to be 2 miles out of the city, now it's in the center of town.
What fun.
cheers mac
time is fun when you are having flies, so says the frog
