Perhaps. Just a regular 10/100 nic will probably do. You can get a USB DSL modem, but personally, I would stay away from them. Harder to share the connection. With a DSL modem that connects via ethernet, it's easy to share with a router. Can share with USB modem, but you'll have to configure a computer to be a router.
Found Blue Yonder, BTW: http://www.blueyonder.co.uk/

Step 4 - From the cable modem , the network cable goes into your PC via a Network Interface card. You may need to get a NIC card fitted, but if you like our engineer will do that for you at the same time for an additional £25 charge.
whats the best type to get?
Lots of diff prices ??

Best type of NIC to get? The cheapest one!
But really, get a good name one for as low as you can find. Linksys, d-link, netgear, kingston are all good and cheap. 3com and intel are more expensive. Do it yourself, why pay 25 smackers to let someone tear up your comp when you can do it yourself?

I have great resevations about letting telecoms (Engineers) wire up anything more complicated than a door bell.
I will be installing as much of this as possible myself I guess if I buy a nic card & baz it in for future use I can disable it in windoze somewhere as I dont yet have the comms soft?

Don't go cheapest. If you pay $10.00, you'll get $10.00 performance, and a card that doesn't work a year later.
Best bet would be linksys, or 3com.

Blueyonder is similar to the American cable modem and quite dissimilar to ADSL. If you do get Blueyonder it's worthwhile investing in a decent firewall because you are connected as soon as you power on your PC and it's a static IP address
BT ADSL on the other hand is dynamic IP address and you still need to manually connect using your dial up connection.
ADSL installation and running costs are starting to come down in price now compared to Blueyonder and it's worthwhile asking how many people will be sharing the connection with you because if your in an area saturated with blueyonder broadband connections bandwidth at peak times may become limited.
