    winXP disk cleanup

Anyone experience this one? Disk cleaner hangs at "compressing old files". Even if I exit the prog, it sucks down my cpu - have to shut it down in task manager/processes.

    Help please

Does it actually go to 'not responding' under task manager?

On my old laptop (600 Celeron) it takes ages (about 10 minutes) to run disk cleanup under W2K and hangs around on 'compressing old files' for most of that time.

Therefore, if it doesn't go to 'not responding' try leaving it for a while. If it does, you could still try leaving it for a bit 'cos XP sometimes recovers 'not responding' programs and they complete whatever they were trying to do.

Failing this, please supply more info about your system (cpu, ram, etc.).

Running XP on AMD XP1700, 256M ram - do not get "not responding" message. Cpu loads at 98/99% & overheats after 10 min in this condition. Cleanmgr.exe is the program that loads w/disk clean.

Best (only actually) "maybe" fixes I found were through Google Groups.
