    win2k corrupted/missing ntoskrnl.exe !!

Hi all, fiddling about last night trying to change bootlogo.

This meant copying, changing and overwriticing C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Upopn reboot i get a ntoskrnl missing or corrupted, please reinstall file. However i cant boot up in safe mode and to repair i need my raid drivers whicj are - yup - on the HDD...

However i made a backup of ntoskrnl.exe in the C:\ root.

Im a little loat to format etc, so i was wondering if i could possibly use my win 98 CD to boot to prompt and copy c:|ntoskrnl to C:\windows\system32...

Would this work or would file protection bite me??

If this didnt work would it be poss to install 98 on D: part and carry out the above form there...

Need reponses quickly plz, please notify me at gnvq1@manorcollege.org.uk as soon as poss (today plz )

you can boot from the win2k cd and use the recovery console to replace the file. if you boot from win98 AND you have ntfs, you won't be able to see the drive.

    Got fat 32 faorunatley

However when i use recovery console it loads up -- and thewn the screen just goes -- black -- could this be due to me not having the TRAID driver availiable, if so i'll use win 98 to extract the zip to a floppy from the HDD and unzip it to a floppy from another machine...

just use the win98 floppy then. recovery console should give you a prompt similar to dos. use whatever works.

make sure that you get the ntoskrnl from another system with the same type. If you have win2k pro, get the ntoskrnl from another win2k pro machine. Good Luck!!

Well 2k repair and repair console refused to work again - however i was saved by the bootable win 98 CD ... I'll never say another bad thing about 98 again ... well for this week anyways

    I hope this helps:
I used this procedure to change my W2K logo, without affecting the original. http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00027.asp

    It works great.

Note: the other images in the kernel are useless(?)... I tried zapping them all.
If you find more ways, let me know.

rick42, i must say thats a much more comprehensive guide than the one i used at tweak IAOLS, i may check it out over the week in more detail, but baisically if i screw up all i will have to do is access boot.ini from dos and change the parameter back to ntoskrnl.exe ?

yes if you don't keep multiple boot entries. No, if you do.... just select another kernel (the original).
