    why

    Anyone have any ideas why somtimes when i do a scandisk or norton disk scan i get cross referenced files the one i just had was ie5 history but i updated to ie6 ages ago scandisk fixed it for now anyway until my next one. could this be a dying hdd.
    my os is win 98se

    Do you mean "Cross-Linked? This is usually caused by a hard shutdown - not uncommon in Win9x systems.

    Do a complete Scandisk w/surface check on the drive. It takes time, so be patient. If you get any bad blocks/clusters, look for a replacement. These are like a cancer and will spread.
