Legend (aka four crystals of trazere), and no, it's not free, but it comes on 2 floppies and is from soemthing like 1991, so you might be able to pick it up cheaply from a garage sale or something.
**** good game, tough, but **** good, not really an rpg in the typical sense, but it's in that genre (actually it's a lot like baldurs gate).
Like the RPG from Duke Nukem 3D? LoL, just kidding.
I myself enjoy the Baldur's Gate series. It's good for single play...you know, when your home alone and have nothing else better to do. All the free RPGs I've seen have sucked, so if you did find a good one, it'd be a miracle.
Well if you do like baldurs gate then check out legend, although beware the 320x240 vga
Actually the graphics are the best graphics I have ever seen from that time, it's isometric 3D and everything! the graphics at the time were groundbreaking.
Hmmm....well, maybe its me thats stuck in the old school
of RPG (have been playing for the last 8 years, both the
standard way -> around a table with a GM, and through
the computer), but I still hold a penny on the good old
MUDS (Multiuser Dungeons) and then specially on LP-Muds.
(Have also been on the Battletech 3036 some years ago).
For those of you that doesnt know what a MUD is, mud
is a text-based roleplay where you use a telnet session
to connect to the game. Yes, thats right, text based.
No pictures, no sound. It all floats around in your head,
using the best 3D engine of them all. Your fantasy.
Well, the one that I'm playing is called ' Final Realms' and
are located in Norway. The adress is :
telnet fr.hyssing.net 4001 and its an LP-MUD. (Use a
searchengine to get more info on the different types,
or take a look at http://www.mudconnector.com
Yes, have also played BG, Morrowind, Anarchy Online,
EverQuest, Ultima etc etc...but there is something about
the mud....hard to explain.
Just my 2 cents.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and fallout are best RPGs i've ever played. Although if you pick up a copy of BG1 or Fallout 1 now they seem dated because their sequels improved on the games so much.
I'd like to play a more futuristic one but I HATE ANIME WITH A PASSION and thats all that furutistic stuff is.

what are you talking about?
Anime is the best stuff ever.
that's what drives the economy and the computer evolution.
where do you think all the newest technology and games are comming from?
where do you think all the PS2, Nintento, all kind of other consoles are comming from?, that even goes for the Xbox, believe it or not.

The style of art? The television/movie stuff? What do you hate about it? Just curious, since I first saw Starblazers when I was 10 I've been a fan. Have you seen the Final Fantasy: Spirits Within movie? Does this fall into the anime catagory?
RPGs? I'm hooked on 'em. I like all that "Beardy Wierdy" stuff!
The Baldur's Gates were good but they lost me on the last expansion. I thought Planescape: Torment was an exceptional story wrapped up in an RPG.
I'm limping though NWN right now and not really enjoying it. I think I got a bad case of Diabloitus and now inanely clicking on monsters and watching them get mulched doesn't do much for me. I know it ain't RPG, but a nice game of online Wolfenstein gets me going nowadays.
I'm holding out for Galaxies and the new generation of online role-players. If they can mix up some of the thrills (and uncertainty of live targets) that you get in online shooters with an online world with some depth to it, I'm in.
I could tell you what this is a screenshot of, but then I'd have to kill you. This is coming out Christmas time-ish by a major publisher and is an online role-player currently in Beta.
