Vid card for older system?
Ok I asked this question in another post in another area, didnt get very much feedback so I thought I would try here.
My friend has a K6-II 500 MHz, on a Soyo SY-5EMA+ Motherboard.
I was thinking about getting the PNY Geforce4 MX 420, but after reading many different reviews, it seems a lot of people think it is a step backwards, that the Geforce3 TI200 is better.
So what are the "experts" opinions? The comp is gonna be used for everything, but he wants to be able to run games like Max Payne, and Quake, and Unreal Turnament. But he also does not wish to spend over $150, as he is planning to build newer and faster in December.
Thanks

hmm its a tough one.
If he really wants to play games on that spec then i would go for a geforce3/4 depending on how much money he wants to spend. Eithe of the cards will be overkill for the system but should be fine to run games in december when he gets a faster pc.
From the two if the price is the game i would put my money on getting the Geforce 3 ti200. it may not give any better results on the current machine than the Geforce4 MX but with a more powerful system it will outperform the gf4mx
Hope this helps

Ok thanks, he is looking at keeping this system as is (once finished), and putting a G4/4600 in the one he builds in december (P42.0A@2.5GHz, 1GB 2700DDR, P4B533 MB), I think it will rock. Me personally, I am waiting to see about that AMD Clawhammer.

If I had the choice between a GF3 Ti200 or a GF4 MX420 i'd definatly go with the GF3... Anything more than a original GeForce 256 DDR or GF2MX400 would be overkill for that system.

Ok here is what I found on NewEGG.
VGA CHAINTECH Geforce3 TI200 128MB TV Retail Box $135.00
VGA PNY Geforce3 TI200 64MB DDR TV/DVI LIFE TIME REPLACEMENT BY PNY $135.00
Same price; more memory, or lifetime warrenty???
So which should I go with?? The chaintec is 128MB!!!! The PNY is 64MB, but has lifetime replacement.
I mean, I dont think my system would even notice the difference between 64MB and 128MB cause it is so slow, but I know my wallet would feel the difference if one died in a few months..
