Win98 boot problem
I have been trying to help a neighbor with a boot problem on her Dell PC running Win98. At boot, she gets a blue screen error. I was able to go into safe mode ant then pinpoint the problem to the system.ini file. I then was able to isolate it to the system.drv start option. I unchecked that and the ssystem boots a bit slow, but it comes up and seems to work okay. What is the system.drv file and how do I replace it? No, she does not have an ERD diskette. The current setting I unchecked is:
On my IBM Aptive, the same setting is:
What does system.drv do? How do I repair this system? Is it possible to put in the Win98 CD and let it install over the old system to repair this. Thank you in advance for your help.
Im not sure but try booting into windows and go to:
Start>Run and type SFC then press enter, scan for any altered files and if the offendng one turns up - restore it from the CD.
This may or may not wok i am unsure. It is possible to intall 98 over the top again yes, but really it seems a bit drastic at such an early stage
One thing, watch your restore from the CD. Make sure that you use the correct file. There is a hangup in GOD Bill's work. Certain files will restore from the setup cat side instead of from the general o/s cat files. This error will totally destroy your o/s. Make sure that the restored file you are using are out of these (general cat).
If you browse the cats, you will discover quite a few that appear to be the same but are not. Most of the file dates are the same, but the size and most of the time, the timestamp is different. Look for the file with the latest timestamp and compare it with the one your want to replace. Look closely at the file. If they look identical, get or compare the file from another known (completely patched) working machine. Back up the original before making this change, just in case it will not work. Certain DLL files are machine specific.
The problem stems from Adobe Type Manager fonts. You'll need to disable ATM , follow the link
I had this issue with Adobe Photo Deluxe (camera software). I uninstalled it then reinstalled with out the Font Type Manager. I never did pursue an update since I was not using the addon.
