I can't share my files in XP

I am on a small 2 computer LAN.
As long we used Win98 or Win2K no matter what combination everything was all right.
Now I decided to give WinXP a try, while on the other computer there is a Win98 SE.
So now i can't share anything. here is what happens: i start that Network conf. wizard, i do everything right, he says everything's ok, but when i want to share a folder i see nothing has happened.
And i can't access my computer from the other one in any way. That for sure an account problem, but i couldn't find where to set it up right.

did you add the same usernames and passwords on all the systems? unless you are in a domain environment, you must manually add each account to each system. it's a pain in the ****, but that's the only way to do it.

Check the Propeties of your Local Area Connection in Control Panel > Network in XP. Go to the Advanced tab and disable the Firewall.

Be sure that the XP machine is a member of the Workgroup. XP defaults to the MSHOME workgroup. Match subnet masks too.

Forgive me if this sounds too simple, but have you checked file sharing for the individual folders? I had to do this myself last night. You probably already did that though.

You didn't by change reformat the xp machine with the ntfs file system did you...if so then the files from each computer are invisable to each other...ie. fat16 or 32 on the win98 and ntfs on the xp machine would mean that the files cant be shared between the two..

That's not right on a network. Over the network you can see ntfs volumes through win98. What happens is 98 requests the file from xp, xp translates and sends to 98 box. Only if you had 98 on a machine and your slave hard drive was ntfs, then you wouldn't be able to see it.


Sounds like a user problem to me, make sure your usernames and passwords are set up correctly, and identically on all machines.

XP uses an updated networking program to 9x and possibly 2k. go back to the wizard in XP and elect to copy the setup files to a floppy, and transfer them to 98, all should then be hunky dory
