    modem troubles

Trying to install new 56K modem.
Was fitted with a PCI56RVP which is a Rockwell chipset (twin chip).
I have a further two of these as well as two PCI56SRXV, Rockwell/conexant.
    It was working Sweet!
    Problem is this
Landlord left the d**n thing plugged into the phone---AGAIN!
    Thunderstorm! Zap! He calls me
Can you fix my computer! I can't get on the internet!
    Here is my problem
Tried to replace the original PCI56RVP with another of the same type. However now it comes up with a "! " on unknown devices under system.
It informs me that there is no PCI controler driver. Yet when I remove the modem, the conflict disappears.
So I tried a SRXV type
One works, diog reads the modem as OK, dials, but will not connect. Tried second and whole computer locks up
Why would a replacement RVP not work when the original did before the lightening?
Please--save my sanity, or what is left of it

Did you try another slot? It could be wiped from the storm hopefully another slot will work if the pc itself is still working also if you are plugging phone line into a surge protector that could be wiped as well try directly just in case.

    pci slot change

Tried all PCI slots. His system only has 3.
    Tried all five modems.
Brought all five here and tried them on my system.
    Same thing.
    No PCI Controler.
Take them out and no PCI problem
Could ME (he is running the same OS as I am) simply throw a mental with these modems?
Before the storm, the modem was working fine.
    I don't understand it
    Can not think of solution
Getting very pissed. Have to take modem (33.6k) out of my mother's computer to put in his and put a 14.5 k in to replace hers untill I can get another modem

Do the pci slots work with any other devices like soundcard etc.? Does the 33k modem work in a pci slot meaning did you get to try it yet? Hope the bus isn't fried.

Tried all of the PCI slots with PCI soundcard
Card works fine on all slots
Replaced Modem with a 33.6 Dynalink. Trouble is this modem has the tendancy to kill the mouse when on line. Why? I don't know.
Using mouse keys when on line.
It will get him by untill something turns up
    Thanks
    Rick
