Well, the power supply that came with my $30 computer case finally kicked the bucket! It only lasted about six months. It was the "King Star" (model KC-300). Major piece of ****.
I bought an Antec 'TruePower' (model TRUE330), 330W PSU, and I just would like to comment that it is amazing! Right now the power filter on my 55-gallon aquarium is making more noise than my computer! It even controls the speed of the case fans.
Anyone know how dependable, reliable, and stable this PSU is? I know it is 1,000 times better than the **** I was relying on, and that my motherboard probably lost a bit of its lifetime when the old PSU kicked, but I'm still curious just how superior the Antec power supplies are.
Antec is using them on the new plus series cases so they must be good PSUs
I hear they are very good PS, ive read very good reviews on them. I wanted to try this Truepower out out but I went cheap and took some 20$ 300 watt ps from codegen, oh well I hope it does not blow up like yours althought the codegen is wisperquiet.
Ive heard about them controling the case fans, but im not sure how well they work. Is it variable speed or 7volt or 12 vold kind of thing? Does it give you more performance?
It is variable power for the fans, and it even has a wire to plug into motherboards that support speed monitoring, to report to the motherboard the speed of the fans. Unfortunately, my board doesn't have this feature.
I plugged my front fan, and my rear (PCI-type) exhaust fan into the PSU. It's been cold here (Syracuse, NY area) since last night when I installed it, so I haven't heard it step up the case fans yet. I have heard it idle the fans from full power after I turned it on, though. It starts them at full, then gradually drops them down. Right now there is just a quiet little hum coming from the machine.
As a side note, I never realized how loud my hard drive really is, because the old PSU nearly drowned out its' sound. When I access the drive now, it seems to make quite a racket!
