No Mouse or Keyboard
HP Vectra 550 P boots up to the desktop with all the icons and then voila, the mouse and keyboard don't work. Like a system freeze.
What in the heck can cause a prob like this?
Salute and thanx a mil.

Try unplugging the keyboard and mouse, then, plug them back in to make sure they are seated properly. If using the port (instead of USB), make sure computer is turned off. You can destroy a port unplugging devices while the system is running.

Greets,
Thanks for the help but that didn't fix it. Got any other ideas what I might check out.

is the keyboard recognised in the BIOS, and does the mouse move as the windows screen is loading and then freeze after?

If the pc loads to the desktop with no keyboard or mouse errors appearing, sounds like someone been playing around in the registry.
what OS are you using?
its hard to soar with eagles when you are surrounded by turkeys

Win 98 is the OS. Why do you think somebody monkeyed around with the registry?

Strawbs,
You got it! The mouse works right up to the desktop and then freezes. Got any idea what can cause this or how to fix it?
Thanx a bundle.

corrupt drivers can cause this, try updating the MoBo drivers!

Greets,
The mouse and keyboard work in safe mode and DOS but freeze up immediately after the Windows Desktop finishes loading. I did several Selctive Startups and tries killing programs in the Startup Folder. I was looking for conflicts and couldn't find any.
I don't have startup disc because the company that installed this computer didn't provide any. Now they're out of businees.
You guys got any more ideas?

Have you got a 12 gauge or a Uzi around?
Try deleting the KB and Mouse drivers from the system folder, reboot and see if PNP can figure it out.

Greets once again,
I still aint got it fixed. I got a recovery disc from HP and reinstalled everything. Still no good, same prob. I even went so far as to manually fdisk, format and clean install 98, same prob. I didn't clear the CMOS as of yet.
Can someone shine a floodlight on this subject? I'd be forever beholdin to ya.
Salute.

did you try another mouse/keyboard? I have seen keyboards go bad before and take the I/O controller with them. I had to replace a guy's motherboard after it just died one night. He kept the same keyboard and the system would occasionally lock up. We replaced the keyboard and it has been smooth sailing.

Set cmos to defaults. Then report back if no help. I would suspect a bad cable or mouse or KB connection. Could also be an IRQ conflict, but first things first.

Maybe try using a PS/2 to Serial adapter, and plug one of them into the serial port?
System Specs:

Athlon XP 1800
Shuttle Ak31 v2.0
Dragon Orb 3
256 Mb PC2100
30 Gig Maxtor
32Mb Nvidia Tnt2 Agp
Lots of Blood, Sweat, and Tears...

I did two separate system recoveries with the HP Recovery CD. I went so far as to reformat and manually install 98. I even went so far as to try another hard drive.
I unplugged the keyboard and the mouse separately and still got the freeze.
I flashed the bios with the latest and still no fix.
I have bought another motherboard through an online auction. I'll be getting that next week. I'll post tan update when I install the board.
Salute and thanx
