Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition
PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.*
Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor
    CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device.

You never really want to be running a Windows O/S anywhere near the absolute minimum requirements. Practically speaking I'd say a processor on the high side of 500MHz and 128MB (much better at 256MB). Below that I would question the 'upgrade' to XP (if that's what we're talking about).

I had it running on a Duron 750mhz 128mb ram (3rd system) and I though it was a little sluggish. But added another 128mb ram and it picked up quite a bit.

I got XP running on a Pentium 90 using undocumented setup
switch's. It looked real pretty but was rather sluggish.

Played with for a couple of days- killing unused services,
cpu intensive system protection stuff and the networking-
    it picked up a little.

    oops...
Intel Gx board P90 48mb ram 800mb cd external modem

    added:

    switch's were ............ setup /is /nm

Slipping the memory and processor checks

It runs on my dad's 500MHZ 256Mb sdram...but barely. He turned off their visual display styles stuff and used classic mode. That helped out a lot.

XP likes Fast CPU's and lots for memory, like 2000Pro does.

XP and 2000Pro really scream with 512mb or more ram.

I would say 256mb Min (Real world).

    P2 400, with alot of memory or P3 650 with 256mb.
    Intel I5 750 @ 2.67 Ghz, 4gb GSkill DDR3 1600, GB P55M-UD2, XFX Radeon 5850. , Seagate Constellation ES 1 TB, Seasonic Gold 620w, Win Vista Ultimate, Toshiba 32" HDTV

Amended :The switch /IS - Ignores the routine System check

I have a jumble of these undoc'd switchs accumulated over time.
Some tried some not. Each i've used has worked.
Gimme an email address and i'll forward.

I do'nt run email clients on kit anymore - way too much agro.
Hotmail does nicely and free storage.
