You can make a screen shot of the whole desktop by hitting print screen, which copies the desktop image to Clipboard. Then, you open any image viewer (I use Paint Shop Pro, so I can choose more image types..e.g., JPG, BMP, TIF ect, ect.) but you can use Windows Paint, and just make the image a BMP. Just open the application and select paste..this puts the desktop image into Paint, where you can save it as BMP ect.
If you have something in the background..like maybe the desktop which you don't want showing up in the image, use alt-print screen to get just the active image into the Clipboard. In this case, all you will have when you do the paste will be the active image, and if the desktop happened to be in the background, it will not show up in the pasted image
