HP Pavillion 6630

I am trying to help a friend re-load his HP Pavillion 6630. One recovery disc is lost and the other is in very bad shape. Hp advised "buy a new computer", we no longer support this model.

Are there any other options? Is there anyplace that might sell these recovery discs?

Any help is vry much appreciated.

HP may not support the 6630, but if you did deep into their site, using the serial number, you can find the option build. It will list, down to the model number of each chip, module and card installed. If I remember correctly, the 6600 series shipped either with 95C or 98A (OEM Versions), depending when it was bought.

This will get you started for the basics. I have been informed that the 6630 and WinME does not get along. The site list a bios upgrade for XP, but XP like 1024 megs of RAM. I would still upgrade the bios, but I would install Win98 SE, with IE 6.0 and the patches. I cannot remember if the 6630 has two memory strips or three. If it has two, you will be limited to 512 megs of RAM. Since SE does not like anything over 512, I would stop there. SE may find most of your drivers that are needed, if not use the drivers listed on HP page, then go to CNET.com and run their update service.

The HP 6630 shipped with 98se, a tri-gem cognac mobo, 500 mhz celeron, 10 gig tri-gem/samsung hd, a piece o **** conexant kflex modem, 64mb of hyundai ram and what they tried to call a psu that put out 100 watts max. anyway instead of using the recovery disks you would be better off loading it with a copy of 98se because the recovery disks will also load a bunch of system hogging proprietary software thats best left to the trash can...all of the drivers needed for that system are on the reg 98se cd anyway because it uses the intel 810 chipset and the rest is just plain jane vanilla hardware.
