    connect win98 to a domain

I am having a problem connecting a win98 machine to a win2000 server domain. I have loaded the client program for win9x, used poledit.exe and created the config.pol file and saved it to the correct folder on the server.

In network neighborhood properties, I checked the box: connect to windows NT domain and entered the domain name.

On the server, a user and computer account has been enabled.

After logon(win98), a message is displayed that says, A domain server can not be found. (I click ok, and go on)

In network neighborhood the win98 machine shows up as being in a workgroup, however folders can be seen and accessed.

I also have a XP pro machine that connects to the domain with no problems.

I'm about to scrach my head bald trying to connect to the domain, does anyone have an idea?

Are you specifying the domain as YOURDOMAINHERE.COM?

Check Event Viewer on the domain controller to see if the Win98 PC is at least trying to connect and why it was rejected. If there's nothing there about it, you must be entering the domain name improperly.

The event viewer has a bunch of DHCP errors and some net logon errors.
I have all static IP addresses. I'll disable DHCP server and try again.
I'll post back and let you know.

no luck, however there was no entry in the event viewer for the most recent logon attempt.

Should the domain name for a pre 2000 OS be: domain instead of domain.name?

First thing to check is to make sure you can ping your domain's computer name to ensure you have connectivity to the domain contrller.
What mode did your domain controller in, mixed mode or native mode??
If the win2k server is in mixed mode, use the old-style domain name not with the domain.com style which is an DNS style.
In the case of native mode, you will have to made your win98 machie to point to the DNS server of your domain which contain your domain DNS registration to enable the client to resolve the domain name correctly.

Ping to domain server was successful.
    Server is in mixed mode.
changed the domain name on the win98 machine to a single name.
    still no luck.

about 30 warnings from 8:15 to 8:19 for Mrxsmb and 1 for netlogon.
    don't know what Mrxsmb is.

Netlogon is the one we need to look into. Search the MS KB for the error.

I think I have it. Open the Domain Security Policy and look for "Allow Windows 95/98 PCs to connect to the Domain" or similar. I don't have Server set up at home (yet), but I recall something like this in Domain Settings.

I'm out of ideas. If I had more experience with this, I might be able to help.

Try posting to the MS newsgroups:

    http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...ps/default.asp

The second one is your best bet.
