    System temperature question

Can someone please tell me what the safe operating temperature range for an Athlon 800 should be? (there has been no overclocking).

Also, what is the safe temp range for a motherboard running this CPU (I have an Asus A7V).

I am trying to see if I need to improve the cooling of my system.

    Thanks
    -David

    Hi David,

There really isn't the perfect temperature at which to operate a system. The best answer is the lowest you can get it at a cost reasonable to you! However, there are some facts you should know. The following list of numbers are the comparative failure rates of an Athlon or Pentium-like microprocessor device, normalized to 25°C. Note that at 41°C, the failure rate doubles, and at 59°C it quadruples. Thses numbers will give you a rough guide of temperature versus failure rate...then you can set your goal and cool accordingly. Also, remember that if a device operates at a higher temperature for a short period of time, the likely effect on failure rate is small. So, those uncooled (un-air-conditioned) days that your system is subject to during the summer months do do any real harm!

David, I've got an 800 Slot A O/C'd to 950 running stable at 44C 24/7 at 100% usage cracking RC5. It's been running like this for a little over 3 months now. Hope this gives you an idea of a comparison to where you're at.

    David --

I'm running an 800 slot A, OC to 867 and average around 40-42 at the CPU and a case temp. around the 35 degree mark. I did read somewhere that you shouldn't let your CPU run above 125F though.

My Slot-A Athlon 900mhz @ 1,000mhz runs in the range of:

    Idle: 99-108°F (37-42°C)
    Load: 110-118°F (43-47°C)

The range varies so much due to my homes central heating. As long as no one else cranks up the heater, then I stay at the lower end of that range.
