You, I believe, are remembering right. Put the hdd in one slot, the blank hdd in the other slot, and it clone to the second hdd.
NO PC needed.
No, it seem you can NOT split it for dvds.

When you clone a drive, you copy everything on it onto another drive, so that the two are effectively identical. Normally, you would clone to an internal drive made external via a SATA/USB adapter...
