hello 2 all.
let me start by saying i'm very attached to my old MS sidewinder gamepad.
thats why when i bought my new computer and saw there is no gameport on it
i was totally disappointed, so i tried 2 override my onboard soundcard with an old soundcard but it didnt work...
so after months of searching i found something like a connector that in one side it has a gameport entrance, and on the other - COM (to connect to the computer)
so i was happy like a 5 year old in "Toys R Us" at his birthday.
i connected the gamepad and pressed on the "mode" button in hope that MS WINXP will recognize MS gamepad with no problem. (hey... at least the light in the gamepad turned on....)
but WINXP faild me. (daaa, would i post here if it worked?!?!?)
i've searched for drivers to a gamepad connected in COM but found nothing.
suggestion anyone?
(rather then buying a new gamepad, or slamming my head against a wall until
i'll forget what is a gamepad....)
You haven't given us any specs on the system in question which is important if we are to know how you're got your system configured. What brand? Model#? Processor - AMD or Intel? How much memory onboard?
There are many things that could have prevented your soundcard from functioning
and having complete specs helps in the troubleshoting of problems.
I am in the same boat as you are. My old MS Gamepad is sitting helplessly on the shelf since I have never been able to find a driver for it that worked.
I have the original cd with drivers that came with my Sidewinder. One of my machines is an IBM P133 (bumped up to 200mmx) OSR2. It has an old soundcard with the gamepad connector. I keep it just to run my old games. None of my more recent comps running XP have the port so I don't know if the drivers will work in XP or with the adaptor but if someone has a site to host the file it's yours. Don't think MS would deprive us of a bit of retro fun.
LPTECH,
i actually don't want to connect the old soundcard 'cause i think it has 2 b
another solution, a connector is a better solution i think.
but i'll tell u the specs.
intel pentium 4 3.0GHz 512MB (DDR2, soon 1G)
intel D915PGN chipset (onboard: network card, soundcard)
WIN XP pro
2 SATA hard drives
ATI RADEON X600 pro 256 MB ("fueled" by those laime Sapphire).
scasi LG CDRW 52x32x52x (i dont need 2 know this but its there)
i tried to disable the onbord soundcard and to put an old one
(i dont remember what brand it was)
it was a long time ago so i dont really remember what was the problem, but i started to look for the connector 'cause it didnt work.
i'm finding it hard 2 believe that no one encountered a similar prob and worked out a good solution ( i truely think the old sidewinder is a kickass gamepad)
You can see soem 5.1 channel cards still have a game/midi connector. I only posted this link as an example. I think some Audigy's still have a game port with the digital outputs and 5.1 channels. I have not seen a 7.1 with the game port yet - if ever - maybe not enough space with 2 more jacks. They could also run a cable to another empty pc slot though.
Anyway - you can install one of the newer cards which will work with XP. Uninstall the onbaord sound card drivers and reboot. Disable the onboard sound in the BIOS.
You should then be able to use a generic gamepad driver to enable the basic functions of the pad (d-stick and all buttons - just set up the generic driver correctly or install the driver that came with XP for your sidewinder. See the image attached.
OK guys,
second attempt to save my MS gamepad...
i had my cousin send me from the US a USB-Game Port adapter from
"RadioShack" (if you're interested: http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...t%5Fid=26-164#
), its a really cool one it has 4 options
(Game Pad/ Joystick A/ Joystick B/ Wheel)
it sayes on the online manual that the system requirements is pentium /II/III
on WINDOWS 98 with USB port....
but i thought :" hey if it works on 98 why wouldn't it work on XP for sure??"
so guys... the answer is NO.
i tried all kind of stuff 2 get it 2 work, but i'm out of ideas.
i really don't know what to do with this, but i thought if someone has my problem and intends on buying the connector as a solution - DON'T
at the moment i'm searching a connector that will work on XP, if i find something
i'll bring it here....
well, i tried this solution although that wasn't the problem, it didn't worked.
the problem was that according to the manual, http://www.radioshack.com/images/Pro.../OME26-164.pdf
when i connect the adapter, in the Game Controller menu i should c several options, or at least one that is:
"4 axis 8 button joystick" and i should select it and manage it...
the problem is that in the Game Controller menu i only c something that is called "USB ADAPTOR" and in the properties none of the buttons work
(u know, when u press a button - a round red circle with a number in it lights)
and when i try to clibrate it it doesn't respond either....
what do u mean by "usb controller" u asked about the gamepad or the adapter?
oh,and one more question , the MS sidewinder gamepad is a digital or analog joystick?
