Files not deleted

When I delete files from my D: drive the file name disappears but the space used does not. The same happens whether I delete from the command line and/or by using the Windows delete (I do hold down shift key). I have checked and these files are not in my recycle bin. It also happens to be large files that are being deleted, 2.5-2.6 gb...

This is a new problem, it just recently started to happen.

Both hard drives are Western Digital
Primary is 40 Gb, partitioned as 3
Secondary is 20 Gb, all as one

I am running WinXP-sp2/1gig of ram/AMD xp

What files are you trying to delete? Some files are protected by the Windows File Protection mechanism and will be replaced if deleted/corrupted.

I am attempting to delete files created by PowerQuest's product Drive Image (a Ghost type product). These are backup images files.

Remember the file names disappear, but the space used does not...

Try Ccleaner and see if this works.

I had a similar problem a while ago, I was losing space rapidly, 20 gigs, an couldn't find were the space was being used. I did a free space wipe of my HD an got the space back. This was my backup drive.

I use BCWipe v2.37 free version.....

I think BCWipe is a pre-Windows program so do not use it unless you have an image that is on removeable media.

Use Ccleaner first. Use the latest version as shown.

Ok, I ran ccleaner, but it did not cleanup my un-used space problem.. D: properties show I have 16,779,538,432 total bytes available, but a CMD-line directory shows 10,870,804,482 used with 3,286,642,688 byes free, which leaves me with 2,600,000,000+/- not accounted for...which also happens to be the size of one of the backup files which get deleted nightly...

BCWipe did not clean up this problem either.

Any more suggestions...

That difference may be due to conversion differences but it's too much of a coincidence. Try using Windows search utility to find a file with over 2GB (maybe a duplicate of the file you deleted was created). If it can't find anything, which isn't a shock, use something like MoreSpace to locate file hogs. I'd use Eraser to really eliminate the file and wipe the drive's free space.

Could it not be the case that you have two image files stored on your volume at any one time. As one is created, the oldest one is deleted, but you always have 2 images available - a case of how many sessions do you want to keep, (2).

One may have the hidden attributed.

I actually keep 4 images files, 2 each for Drive C and E. Overnight I run a batch file which deletes the oldest one of the 2, then a new Image file is created...The problem is the ones that get deleted, disappear from any list I can create (DOS/Win), but the space is not freed up. Using Dos/Dir /ah and Dir /as, show hidden and system files does not show any files of the size that matters.

I tried using MoreSpace but it does not say anything about cleaning up free space.

I believe the Volume catalog is screwed, and is not longer reporting properly..but I don't know how to correct...

Yes recycle bin is empty and i have run defrag in the past, lately I have taken to copying files to other drive and formating the drive, but that can be a time consuming task..

Thanks
