Memory Problems

I have a pentium 100 Motherboard which has an id of Intel 82430VX VER 4.6.
I installed a 128mhz ram chip in the DIMM slot but I my computer only sees 32mb. Is ther something i need to change on the board jumpers?
Is there a manual for this board? And can I get a copy of it?

Motherboard ID

Got to How to Identify an Intel Motherboard. Once you've identified your board, you can download the manual and technical info.

THIS IS TYPICAL OF MEMORY FOR INTEL PENTIUM BOARDS

System Memory Combinations

The motherboard has two 168-pin DIMM sockets.

Memory can be installed in one or two sockets. Minimum memory size is 8 MB. The maximum memory size is 256MB. The BIOS automatically detects memory type, size, and speed so no jumper settings are required.

The motherboard supports the following:

168-pin 3.3 V DIMMs with gold-plated contacts
60 and 66 MHz bus speeds

60ns 3.3V EDO DRAM

60ns unrestricted CAS Latency 2 unbuffered 4-clock 3.3V SDRAM
Caching for the first 64 MB of main memory
64-bit data path

The motherboard supports single- or double-sided DIMMs in the following sizes:

DIMM Size Type Configuration Technology
8 MB 60ns EDO 1M x 64 16 M bit
16 MB 60ns EDO 2M x 64 16 M bit
32 MB 60ns EDO 4M x 64 16 M bit
64 MB 60ns EDO 8M x 64 16 M bit
128 MB 60ns EDO 16M x 64 64 M bit
8 MB CAS Latency 2 SDRAM 1M x 64 16 M bit
16 MB CAS Latency 2 SDRAM 2M x 64 16 M bit
32 MB CAS Latency 2 SDRAM 4M x 64 16 M bit
64 MB CAS Latency 2 SDRAM 8M x 64 64 M bit
128 MB CAS Latency 2 SDRAM 16M x 64 64 M bit

Memory type, size, and speed can vary between sockets, so EDO and SDRAM can be installed on the same motherboard. Parity (x 72) DIMMs can be installed but are not recommended.

Sorry about the format -- tables don't transfer well to this type bbs

Forgot to mention most of the Intel motherboards of this era support unbuffered, 4-clock 3.3V SDRAM DIMMs only. Buffered, 5V, or 2-clock SDRAM DIMMs cannot be used. The SDRAM's were 66 MHz back then.

Thank you for your reply bbs.
As it happens, my motherboard has only one 168 pin DIMMS slot and 4 72 pins SIMMS.
The memory chip I installed is a PC100 chip. Could this mean I need a 100 MHZ bus and that is why my bios does not see the 128 MB?

If you left your old chip(s) in place with the SDRAM you might try removing them and seeing if the 128 MB memory works. It seems like the SDRAM slot can't be used without removing memory from the first two banks of 72 pin SIMMS--I think address lines are shared.

JohnsMustang:

Sure if the motherboard support that large amounts of memory? I've been overclockng an old Pentium 200 MMX.. so I've checked out the moBo's features. It seems like it doesn't handle larger memory modules than 128mb! The moBo's brand is AOpen AP5T.

Your'e P100 is maybe some years older than this P200MMX.. a year or two maybe. So if the motherboard of an P200MMX only support 128mb modules or less.. it's possible that your motherboard don't even support 128mb mem. modules!

So the mother board ID wasn't Intel 82430VX VER 4.6. That was the chipset....
