Fix for Musiccity Morpheus and WinXP

Just installed Windows XP and apart from a few things it was going great.

Installed a few apps (wondering if they would work or not ) they did.

then i re-booted and as soon as it started up morpheus crashed.

lots of re-booting, re-installing etc. later i still had no joy.

i went to the musiccity forums and apparently it's a known problem even with the latest version of the software.

they suggested enabling 'compatability mode - win98/me' on the morpheus executable. it didn't work.

i enabled 'compatability mode - win98/me' on the installer file (rec. by XP troubleshooting wiz) and it seems to have automatically enabled it for the exe once installed.

i downloaded 'regcleaner' from www.regcleaner.com to make sure all the registry entries of stuff that didn't work could be cleaned out, and it works a treat. wiping the floor with MS regclean which has been out of date for a long time and tells you bugger all anyway.

i found that there was and entry for netscape in the registry next to the morpheus entries. i don't use netscape so i removed the entry along with all the morpheus entries as well.

out of curiosity (i'm that sort of person) i re-started morpheus and got the register window you get when you first install it.

i filled it back in and it worked fine. about 8 re-boots later and it is still working a treat.

I'm not sure if it was the 'phantom' netscape entry or removing one or all of the morpheus entries, but something did the trick.

if someone else wants to try it if morpheus doesn't work for them in XP then try just the netscape entry first to see if it is that or one of the morpheus entries 'coz when you re-start morpheus it puts the reg entries back again, but not the netscape one.

microsoft having problems with netscape? who would have thought it!!!!!

Strange, I haven't had any trouble with Morpheus under XP...... Go figure.

doesn't seem to be everyone or even every time. first time i installed XP it was just to see what would work. sorted the good from the bad, found alternatives in most cases and then re-formatted.

it worked a treat the first time and as i rely on it for contact with the outside world (i live on an island off the coast of africa) and don't have any access to most types of media other than TV (you know what i mean ) it is essential.

second time i installed it it happened. couldn't fix it with re-installs so i re-formatted. XP is a doddle to put on and 30 minutes out of my day wasn't too much of a chore as i had already spent an hour trying to figure it.

eventually (3 re-installs later with different settings/things installed etc.) i found the above solution.

that said every now and then it craps out on me now and i have to re-apply the fix, but it seems to be working (the fix) for at least a few days and that's at least a GB of data on my 512K ADSL line.

works for me.
