Lightbulb White water rafting...a word to the wise...

We were on vacation down in NC. We decided to go white water rafting. Assuming all the risks involved in white water rafting. We made reservations with a place that was on the side of road (like most white water rafting places in Banner Elk).

We had an 1.5 hr drive to the insert point. Since they were short that day, our river guide was our van driver. No big deal right? We go done the river...great time. Well, our guide is also our driver back.

The guide/driver either zoned or fell asleep at the wheel and we started off of the road. Once off the road, the load noise a woke the driver and she recovered. I was the only witness to it since I had awakened 5 minutes before.

Later on we talked constantly to keep her awake. She revealed that they have had fender benders because of being so exhausted.

This was the first time I had been white water rafting in which I was not responsible to get to the insert point. It was a lessoned learned...If they don't have dedicated drivers for that day...don't go.

People assume the risks for the adventure, but be aware that the adventure starts @ the parking and not when you go down the river.

Just my 2cents.

Where did you go? I've been down the New River Gorge & the Gauley rivers in W. Virginia years ago.

Thumbs down

That's great. Your guide falls asleep at the wheel, and then admits to crashing because falling asleep at the wheel is a problem for her. wonderful. I tell ya though, I gotta laugh.

It was in Banner Elk NC. I'd have to look @ the pamphlet as to the name of the river. I did the Yough in Penn several times. There the State runs the insertion point. You have to make a reservation with them. Where we were @ it was just a free for all.

Just be carefull.

Not only an eye opener from what happened, but then to admit that the employees have fender benders all the time....adds a totally new dimension to white water rafting.

Actually, I almost fell out of my seat when she admitted that they have accidents all the time.
