The above statement is misleading. Even though the BartPE disk will not autorun from within WinNT, ME, and 9X, it will however boot a system that has those OSes installed and allow you to fix problems. The key is "autorun from within" the host OS.
I have used my BartPE disk to fix WinNT, WinME, Win95, 98, Linux, Server2003, or any other OS around.
There is a BIG difference between running BartPE and building BartPE.
Requirements to build:
1. The files from your Windows Installation CD-Rom.
Supported Windows versions are:
* Windows XP Home Edition (must be slip streamed with Service Pack 1 or higher)
* Windows XP Professional (must be slip streamed with Service Pack 1 or higher)
* Windows Server 2003, Web Edition
* Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
* Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
2. PE Builder runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003/BartPE systems.
3. CD/DVD writer if you want to creat a bootable CD/DVD.
Even though you can run BartPE on a Win2K system, the Win2K CD does not have the required files to allow you to build a BartPE disk from them.
You MUST have a WinXP or above CD to build BartPE. I have been able to make a BartPE disk using a Dell WinXP-SP2 OEM CD, but it is not recommended.
I have been building and using BartPE disks for the past 4 years now and I find it an absolute necessity when working on any system. I use it to clean viruses and spyware, backup and recover files from damaged hard drives, edit registries, change user passwords when they can't log in, and a number of other things. My current BartPE build does not even fit on a CD anymore, it will only fit on a DVD. I have over 70+ utilities and programs on my disk now.
