What is Viewpoint Media Player and how does it get onto my system?

Thats basically it in the subject line. Every so often, i'll get a little message saying my viewpoint has been updated. I go into add/remove programs and I see this program there that I never installed. I remove it, only for it to come back a few months later. What is it? Why/how does it install itself on my system and how can I keep it from installing in the future?

Viewpoint media player gets installed with AIM (AOL Instant Messenger). I do not know why they bundle it with AIM, coz it's not like you need it lol but it's just another one of those annoying "install behind your back" bundled programs that doesn't ask your permission to install.

Once you uninstall it in Add/Remove programs, start>search and type viewpoint, then look what folder the viewpont exe is in then delete it. You might have to stop a process in task manager to delete all the files in the folder. You can also go to regedit and delete all the viewpoint objects in the registry if you want.

AIM also creates AOL shortcuts that point to a file in a folder that it makes called AOD within program files. I would delete the links and the the AOD folder as well.

For AIM users, Dead AIM is a good program. It takes away the stock ticker, popups and advertisements.

Yup. It's an AO(hel)L product. AIM gets updated every few months or so to try an thwart the virus writers and it installs with each update. It'll also install if someone sends a media file in their IM. Sucks....

Thanks for posting, but this thread is over THREE YEARS old.

I highly doubt the poster is still looking for an answer.
