Teen Charged with Acropolis Marble Theft

ATHENS (Reuters) - A 16-year-old Canadian girl has been charged with theft after being arrested on suspicion of taking a piece of marble from the Athens Acropolis, her lawyer said Tuesday.

A security guard spotted the girl and a friend Sunday removing and carrying a piece of marble from the Acropolis hill in central Athens and alerted police.

She was charged with theft of antiquities but set free until a court set a date for her trial, her lawyer Leonidas Loras told Reuters. "She is now continuing her holiday in Greece."

The girl, whose father arrived in Athens Tuesday, was on a school trip to Greece with 34 other teenagers from Canada.

Greece, with hundreds of protected and unprotected antiquity sites, bans the unauthorized sale, excavation or purchase of any ancient artifacts.

The Acropolis hilltop is the site of several ancient temples including the 2,500-year-old Parthenon. It is one of the best-guarded tourist spots in the country.
