My new monitor is sweet!
I finally got it! It took months and months of searching and months and months of saving money and months and months of more searching and months and months of more saving when I realized I didn't have enough money but I finally got it!
It is a Samsung SyncMaster 955DF 19". It is huge! I had this scrawny 14" Packard bell monitor, but this is nice.
The only problem is it is too big for my desk.
I also got a new video card: a GeForce 2 MX 400 64MB AGP.
Everything seems to be working nicely, sort of. I popped it in, booted up and Kudzu detected it and configured it and I was up and running. Then I went to nvidia.com and got their drivers for linux and configured the x config file.
Everything looks nice... and big! I'm running no longer at 800 x 600. Now I'm 1280 x 1040!
I am having a few problems with the openGL configuration, though. I launch some games that say they require GL, but they always crash (tuxracer, gltron, heretic II, decent 3, etc). They say they can't find the GL functions in the specified libraries.
Other than that, I'm glad everything worked out so nicely. I'm likely to be using this for quite some time.

Congrats! I too am upgrading to a 19" from a 15"...can't wait! Just hope it fits on my desk. I'm gonna have to find a better video card as well. Never ends, does it?!

I went from a 15" to a 19" and at first I didn't like it... I thought it was TOO big and I was seriously considering returning it for a 17" monitor... After about 3 days I got use to it and now I love it, wouldn't ever trade it in for anything smaller.

Mine is too big. It wouldn't fit in my car and it doesn't fit on my desk. I don't plan on putting it in my car again, but I do want to keep it on my desk, so I'm going to have to figure something out.
At first it was hard to look at, but I think I am getting use to it.
I'm a happy camper!

Yeah, I've got the same monitor, and I love it. I still have my old 15 inch dell in my room, and I can't imagine how I ever used it. I've got my res kicked up to 1600x1200.. awesome.
Later,
-Jim

I appologize, but I can't resist to inform you of my 22" capable of 2048x1536. With the new detonator 4 drivers for my gfII ultra I get 52.2 fps in the above resolution. :-)
Pro small cars & big monitors.

I am spoiled by my work PC.
Its a crappy IBM, but has a SR9Xtreme-16MB SGRAM card, and a 21" monitor.
Only goes up to 1600x1200
I go home at nite and have to look at my little 17", but I have a better card at home, a TNT2 32MB. love that card!

Thanks edwelly,
Actually 1152x864 is not to shabby, I use myself on my iiyama when I have stiff competition and want to be sure the framrate stays up. But to do single player gaming @2048x1536 in 32 bit color is sweeeet!
These days a couple of hundred dollars more spent on video card or processor doesn't make that much difference, but they are very well spent on a monitor.

I just got my new Sony 19" G420.
and all i can say is....
this monitor is BAD @$$!!!!!!!!!
sharpest picture i've ever seen.
decently high res(1920 by 1440) or something like that.
Anyway i only use 1280x1024 at 85hz. Also the two lines seem thinner then the other model i looked at, the viewsonic PF790.
I'd HIGHLY reccomend the sony, it's worth the extra cash. I've never used the samsung 955DF but i know samsung's are awesome too. i had the 753df(17") and it was good, but too low res for me, and too low refersh. this sony is just plain awesome. at MAX resolution i can do 70 or 72 i forget which.

GetReal:Welcome
I guess I am behind the times, but my 17" works great for me. I run it at 1152x864 but I do not do any gaming...

The best Monitors I have seen are all Trinitron, made by Sony.
So if you come across one, grab it.
The little lines may look stange at first, but the picture is the best, and you dont notice the lines after about a week anyway.
I just noticed I have two lines on mine, forgot about it till the last post.....
