Ti200 Toast!

I'm wondering if it's possible for a layman (myself) to figure out what's wrong with my nVidia GeForce Ti200? It finally seems like it gave out last night. It hasn't been overclocked, it will work for a while and then it will reboot my win2k box. I put a MX200 card in and all is well. I feel that the card works until it heats up and then something goes boom. It's a PNY branded card and they no longer support it. Not that it's still under warranty anyway. I guess I'm hoping against hope here.

I put it in a friends box and it worked until I went to load the drivers for it. Then his machine would not boot up properly if at all. Any ideas?
It never accepted the 52.13 drivers anyway, but it doesn't work on the 42.03's either.

I recently had that problem with a brand new Ti4600 card that Leaktek sent to me to replace a damaged one. It seems as if it’s over heating, I got it working in Hl2 for about 10 minutes with my case off, all fan filters off the PCB and the window open (-10 outside). If you've never over clocked the card is either damaged or just operating too hot, check the fan(s) on it to make sure they spin and maybe remove your case's side panel. If all this fails, (if you feel comfortable) take the cooling unit off of the PCB and ensure there is plenty of thermal grease... if not you may purchase some (artic silver is a great cpu thermal compound, $10cdn) and spread it on the GPU and memory chips. If you need more info I'll write something for you, with some diagrams.

telcart,

It seems like maybe the problem is electrical in nature. My buddie's computer seems to have a problem now with the agp slot. His monitor started acting funny, displaying odd shapes and colors with his card. This of course happened after we removed my defective card.

My Abit board imediately froze up when I got home with the MX200 in it. It may be that the card is burning out the agp slot somehow. The fan on the gpu works fine and there is plenty of thermal grease on the gpu/heatsink.

Thanks for the reply though, any other ideas.... except the obvious that the card is toast?

Your card and AGP slot gave out at the same time.

Can't tell which is to blame, but I would throw in the old card if I were you and see if it works without drivers. It sounds like you could get by like that for a while. Use another V-card if you need 800 or above.

Sorry.

telcart,
It would seem that the game is afoot as Holmes would say.

Mm9004,
I'm gonna go with the MX200 in this box for now. I went out and got a Saphire Radeon 9600XT which I'm gonna put in a new build I'm working on. My former #1 card a Ti4200 becomes the backup card for a while and I'll see if this Abit board lives with the MX200 in it. If so I might put the Ti4200 in the rig for a decent second set up.

Thanks for the replies guys.
