athlon xp 3000+ (400fsb) OC??

hey guys i just got finished building my new system.

specs:

-athlon xp 3000+ (400fsb)
-1 gig geil ddr 3200 (2x512) http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage....144-305-04.JPG

-thermaltake xaser III w/ window
-geforce 4 ti 4600
-asus a7n8x-deluxe mobo
-maxtor 120gig @ 7200 rpm (x2)

anyways...i was wondering if any has overclocked a system like this? It doesnt really need to be OC'ed because its **** fast already But if anyone has i'd like to know what they did (bios settings and what not). My CPU currently runs between 115-125 degrees (my aero 7+ heatsink owns!). And if anyone has OC'ed memory on a machine like this i'd also like to know what settings you used and how eveyrthing runs when its OC'ed. Thanks guys.

help

i've been reading alot of other OC'ed system on this forum and was wondering if a few could answer some quesions. First off im just trying to understand exactly how OC'ing works and what each setting in BIOS actually does (im a OC'ing newb). Yes i did read the thread on oc'ing amd's but its not that easy to understand when you are a newb.

My cpu and ram both run at 200 mhz. So the only thing im going to be increasing/decreasing is the cpu mhz / multiplier / vdimm / volts / vcore? Should cpu and ram mhz stay the same?(when i increase one should i increase the other as well?) I just need some basic settings others use to OC there systems so i can experiment a little with mine. Even if its a xp2400 or 2500. Just something to use for an example will be nice.

Also some CPU's come locked? what kind of programs unlock the cpu so you can OC it? Any more info on that would be awesome too. Thanks guys

If you wanted to see real overclockign gains you shoudl really have gone with the 166Mhz variety of this CPU to allow more headroom for pushing the FSB

so the 200 mhz cpu i have cant be OC'ed enough to make a difference? Is it not worth OC'ing or is it something that just cant be pushed as much as the 166 mhz? I guess the questions is..will OC'ing this cpu make a noticable difference?

no, it wont make any difference until a cuple o years when new titles will begin to stress your cpu more.

for now, i wouldnt bother in case you do something you regret.

on the other hand... if you got the 2500+ you would be able to overclock tothe same level as the 3200+ and beyond, for less money than you paid.

its an easy mistake, but sometimes the smaller number is the better option.

ask first and well bone you up on all the essential knowledge.

if you do decide to overclock, youll want to raise the fsb VERY SLOWLY and you may want to lower the cpu multiplier and ram timings if you experience problems.

remember, extra volts means more stability, but also more watts of heat. watts mean temp rise, means instability. if your cooling cant take the heat, extra juice will hinder more than help.

*lecture over*

Oh..i was reading on some other forums on how people have gotten the athlon xp 3200+ to speeds over 3ghz.....no way any 2500+ will do that. Now i just need someone to give me the systems cooling info and the bios settings they used so i can try some OC'ing on my system and see what it does.

gimme any ideas you have for me! lemme know

No AMD processor will hit 3GHz without some serious cooling, if there is one running on air, then it is a VERY rare exception...

If you've got the overclocking itch, the 2500+ is really the only way to go. I went with one of thsoe and I easily hit 3200+ speeds. If it wasn't for the PC2700 memory i'm running, it could probably go even higher than that. I'm not complaining though, I've got a CPU thats equal to the fastest 32bit processor AMD has, and saved myself about $400

http://www.vr-zone.com/guides/AMD/Barton/

there is the link where people go over 3 ghz w/ a barton 3200+. I try some different setting in my bios (multiplier, fsb, volt, vcore, and maybe a few others) and every time i have ever tried to OC at all my PC wont even post. I just wanna see if i can get it to a 3200+ intead of a 3000+ which i know you can....I know im a newb but i must be doing something else wrong. Anyone know why it wouldnt post?

Poor motherboard or ram or improperly configured memory timings or voltages

All you have to do is raise your multiplier from the stock setting (which is 10.5 on a AMD 3000 with 400 FSB) to 11.
Your computer will then be set as a 3200 is set.
Sure other people say they hit speeds with a 2500 that are the same as a 3200, but running at the same speed (megahertz) is not the same thing as it being just as good. Your processor has the 512 megabyte l2 catch as well as other improvements.
The 3000 only runs at 2.09 gigahertz and the 3200 at about 2.2 gigahertz...but you will still notice it performs better than some other processors who run at faster speeds.

In other words I belive you have a Great Processor!
This is just my opinion though!
(If you cant tell...I have one too)

haha..now thats the stuff i like to hear!! I will try raising my multiplier to 11 when i get home. Hopefully it will post. Hey if you have done or plan on doing anything else to your system let me know what setting you use! I want to experiment with mine alot more And your one of the first people who actually have my processor. Most are the 2500+ bartons OC'ed. So let me know what your running for settings and if your plan on doing anything else. THanks man!!
