What is a Nintendo Game Genie?

I am not a gamer type, but recently I bought a used Super Nintendo game console for my kids (at a yard sale, don't ask... I got the console, 2 wired controllers, 2 wireless controllers, a joystick controller, a Gameboy adaptor, the Game Genie, and 25 games (and they all work) all for $26 US...) Yeah, it's outdated, but they are having a great time with it, so who cares?

It had no documentation at all. There was something called a "Galoob Game Genie". Apparently you put the game cartridge into this then insert the enhancer/game into the console. When you turn it on, there is a screen which lets you enter characters, but I don't know why.

What is this 'Game Genie'? What does it do?

And it is worthless without the documentation (codes) that is supposed to be a part of it.

If you had that, you would type in special code letters that would make Mario super charged with more lives or be able to jump higher or whatever the codes say it will do.

You need to find some documentation, and then your kids will get jump started all over again. Maybe an old computer store, or I got ours for Nintendo at Funcoland which is now Game Stop in our region.

Thanks for the replies, folks.
I should have been able to find this. Actually late the other night I did a Google search for this and only got back 4 responses, of which only 2 were English. I guess I must have spelled something wrong (Yet another reason not to drink and surf...)

Not being a gamer type, I never heard of such a thing as a cheat code device. Now to figure out the best way to introduce the kiddies to the benefits of cheating. Hmm, what's a good innocent sounding synonym for 'cheat'?

the real single word, would have been "Hacker"

is true, search the dictionary for the real original Hacker meaning.

so for something that is less "offensive"

you can suggest cheat as

"Unlocking secrects" in many ways it is true, some games has secrect passages that can only be unlock with these, or via some hard travel ways

example, old Mario Bro 1, 2 and 3, and Pokemon, and etc

Wow I remember the game genie brings back memories.

I also remember when I think it was the game shark for the ps?
And codes for games would be released for it in PC mags.

And Funcoland...............I left America in 2000 so this is all a blast from the past. I can't wait till I get back.
