McDATA MC400

Today I acquired an old 386 machine (bloody enormous!) that is some sort of controller ... but I don't know what for.

It is made by McDATA (McDATA 400 model 01R) and distributed by Memorex/Telex (Memorex 2374-1R) who apparently supplied it to BC Systems Corporation who sold it to ... and so on and so on
Anyway ... it has been in a forrestry office up until now.

All adaptor / expansion boards are verticle and are 14"high x 12"deep and slot into connector slots (pinned like an IDE or SCSI slot - only much larger) on the planar board

it has one board that has some Silcom 500 series chip/device in it and the outside port for that thing is a 9 pin (5 over 4) female connector (size of monitor cable connector end approx.) that says T R GATE above the port and RING I/F beside the port. There are also 2 expansion bays on that card that say ME2 and ME1.

The card with the Processor has a port with 25 pins (opposite to a parallel port) with PROC-3 written above it and MAINT PORT written vertically beside it. that card also has the same 2 expansion bays named ME2 and ME1

it has two cards with a combined 34 coax connectors.
18 coax ADP (0,1,2, ... ,15,16,24)
16 coax EXT (16,17,18, ... 29,30,31)

it is
27" high
14" wide
21 " deep

It does not have a hard drive in it.

2 x 3.5" floppy drives in the front

an unused bay that appears to be for a SCSI drive (50 pin)

4 x 40 pin (IDE cable fits) connectors at the rear of the planar board that are only accessible through a removable panel.

2 buttons on the front and an LED (I think) display
1 power
1 IML

Maybe, with one of you smart fellows out there, i can put it to work as something other than a 150 pound paperweight

It's a mainframe controller and makes a great paperweight.

To expound on BPB's comment, some Google hits:

http://www.merchantds.com/controllers.htm

bungee,
You may be able to sell that controller to somebody like one of the above sources, or others who buy used mainframe equipment.

Back when your controller was likely built, here's where McDATA was located:
McDATA Corporation
310 Interlocken Pkwy
Broomfield, CO 80021
USA
